THE Sally Lock Trophy played at Orchardleigh Golf Club by the Ladies section was won this year by nonagenarian Mary Lock, showing you’re never too old to play golf - and at a competitive level.

The 92 year old stormed the course, winning the two round Stableford competition, played on consecutive Thursdays in August. The competition took place when the course was still very dry and the weather reasonably settled, which reflected in some very high scoring.

Christine Arnold brought in the best score of round one with 42 points and Mary Lock was close behind with 41. Carol Marquiss, Marion Underhill and Anne Regler all scored 39 points.

In the second round the weather was not quite so hot and sunny which reflected in slightly lower scoring during the event but Diana Bullock managed the best at 39 followed by Rachel Priddle with 38. However the club’s nonagenarian Mary had a 33 point score in the second round and Christine Arnold 32, so the pair of them had an aggregate of 74, but on count back the Sally Lock Trophy went to Mary Lock. Well done Mary who has proved playing golf can keep you fit and young at heart.

Mary Lock was later presented with the Sally Lock Trophy by Lady Captain Sue Marshall

The Orchardleigh Ladies have not done so well in their league matches this year and although they drew their Bristol & District Alliance match against Wells at home 7/7 they are hovering at the bottom of Division Four, so are almost certainly going back down into Division Five for 2026.

The Somerset Interclub Orchardleigh team have also been struggling a little this year with a recent loss against Mendip at home 1.5/5.5.
