It was again a case of there being no place like home for the Seniors’ section of Fosseway Golf Club who followed a heavy defeat away to Brean with a victory on their own course in the return fixture just a week later.
Allen Cheney and Harold Lidbitter were well in their game before eventually going down 3&1 and there was a similar reverse for Mike Weeks and Nick Foxwell. Acting Captain, Alan Jones and Competition Secretary, Doug Lane and George Underwood and Alan Locke both lost 4&3, Cyril Blacker and John Bendle were defeated 5&4 and Pat Cray and Mike Ricketts went under 6&5.
There was a much closer contest the following week with everything depending on the last match. In the end, Gerry Rowell and Terry Button finished two up to give Fosseway a 3.5–2.5 success.
The most convincing result saw Alan White and Malcolm Tucker win their match 7&5 with Jones and Locke coming through as 4&3 victors. Foxwell and Weeks gained a crucial half, but there were narrow defeats for Lane and Steve Cook, who finished two down and Blacker and Bendle who lost 2&1.
The sun shone for Fosseway’s annual Away Day at Tall Pines Golf Club and it certainly shone for Noel Chatfield, who finished overall winner with an impressive 43 points. Lane was just one point behind and also won the prize for nearest the pin on the 18th while Jones finished third with 41 points and collected the two spot kitty as the only player to achieve a two.
The best score for the first nine holes was claimed by Rowell with Button’s 21 point back nine seeing him beat Lidbitter on countback. Cray was closest to the pin on the ninth hole with White striking the longest drive on the long 15th hole.
Overall, it was an excellent day out with thanks to Jones and Geoff Hallett for all the work they put in organising the event.
