Day One of the Club Championships saw all competitors finding the scoring tough going, despite the course being set up fairly.

After one round, there were some tightly bunched scores, with 77 leading, set by Will Thompson. A surprise package in Ian Nicol was leading the Nett with 65. There were a host of other players within striking distance, with Alan Todd, Ian Burr and Mike Metcalfe, all on 77 and five other players all within five of the lead.

In the Ladies Championship, after Day One, Philippa Gowen led by two shots over Cath Levell and Glynis Slater on 87. Cath led the Nett competition with 70 after round one.

Day Two brought better weather and better scoring. Alan Todd produced the lowest round of the Championship with 74, to take the Club Championship with a 36-hole total, 151 for back-to-back wins. David Cunningham produced two steady rounds to take the Hawksgill Trophy, with a nett total of 138. Day One winners were Div. One: Will Thompson, Div. Two: Ian Nicol and Div. Three: Leigh Harvey.

Meanwhile, for the Ladies, Glynis Slater produced the lowest round of the Ladies’ Championship with an 85 to take the championship with a 36-hole total of 174. In the Nett competition, Cath Levell took home first place with a 146 total. Kathy Lane won Bronze nett with 73 and Erica Klim won Silver nett with 76. Freddie Lovell won the Salver for Best Junior Nett.

Seniors’ Captain’s Day saw 23 groups manage to get round before the heaviest rain. Colin Webber, John Hockey and Dave Flinders came first with 84 points (on countback). George Davis triumphed, with 42 points, (again on countback), for the first individual prize and Captain’s Salver. Richard Birch was second and Steve Payne third. Nearest the pins were Nick Carter, Ron Johnson and Steve Rowse.

Wells’ Seniors had a convincing home win against Knowle, with Len Willis and Alan Burfitt making debuts. Len partnered Captain, Glyn Hallett, whilst Alan teamed up with new Seniors’ Champion, Jack Baillie. The most emphatic win was a storming 7&6 victory by Bill Carruthers and Vice-Captain John Moxon, whilst Ken Ford, Dave Couzens, Tony Harrison and Allan Bancroft were also in successful pairings.
