The Somerset Under 14s event was attended by 36 boys.
After a good start, Ashton Wylie, from Wells, had a front nine total of 36 giving him a three shot lead at the halfway stage. Dropped shots on 10 and 14 gave others an opening to gain shots back. Freddie Turnell showed what a good competitor he is with birdies on 14 and 16, which saw an inward nine score of a 1-over-par. Wylie scored a 6 on 18, and Turnell managed a 5 to take us to a sudden death play-off.
A large gallery accompanied the boys to the first, where both boys slightly overshot the green with their second shots. Playing first, Turnell nearly chipped in for a three and Wylie left his putt short of the hole. First away again, Turnell’s putt narrowly missed, leaving Wylie to find the centre of the cup and the title.
This was a great competition played in an atmosphere of great sportsmanship and true friendship.
Wells’ Seniors were inspired to gain a very creditable win at West Wilts with 3½ games to 2½. Hard-working winners were Nick Carter and Tim Harris, Bob Davies and Nick Wilson and Ken Ford and Mike Gee, whilst a deserved half rewarded the experienced pair Piers Dalby and Bill O’Callaghan.
The Ladies’ Spring Meeting had some high scores with the winners, Tina Davies, Hazel Carmichael and Kitty Usher totalling a fine 89 points. Second were Erica Klim, Sue Slade and Jenny Davis and third, Sandy Heath, Linda Wright and Pauline Garrett.
The Avalon team kicked off their season with a 3–2 home win.
The winning pairs were: Mike Metcalfe and Malcolm Terry with a 2&1 win. James Rutt and Jason Huck won one up on the last hole. Pascal Norman and John Baker had an excellent 3&1 win.
