The main competition for the Men of Mendip Golf Club was the annual running of the Stephenson Cup. 121 entrants found the course in splendid condition with fast running greens. However, scoring did not come easy for the majority of competitors, with CSS rising to 73, two above par for the course. Nevertheless, there were some strong performances from some of the divisional winners.
Division One saw a splendid win for young Jack Hayes, with a net 66, followed by James Herniman, with 68, beating Andrew Jones on countback. Division Two saw a win for Mervyn Vaughan, with net 68, followed by James Richards, with 69, beating Matthew Lawrence on countback. Division Three saw a win for Aaron Mitchell, with net 69, followed by Kevin Salt, with 70, and in third place, Keith Sanders, with net 74. However, the cup winner, playing in Division Three off a sixteen handicap, was Justin Dodd, who carded an excellent net 66 and who beat Division One winner, Jack Hayes, on countback, helped by a birdie, birdie finish.
The Men's Avalon A Team league season got underway with a home fixture versus Cricket St Thomas. A hard-fought contest just went Mendip's way, 3–2, with wins for Ian Fairclough and Steve Rawlings and Rick Kefford and Trevor Oats and halved matches from Paul Reakes playing with Team Captain, Alan Fussell, and Chris Lindley and Danny Middle.
The Ladies held their annual running of the Granny Trophy, which sees an increasing number of entrants each year! An extremely competitive contest this year, with a triple tie on 35 points. After countbacks, the final result saw Carol Mosley in third position, Joan Clark in second, with trophy winner being Jan Fukuyama.
Mendip Ladies held their always popular Open Bowmaker, which this year in total attracted 78 ladies, including fourteen visiting teams. The overall winning team came from Rushmore Park and carded a very impressive eighty points, well clear of any other team. Incidentally, they entered to get a feel of Mendip prior to their club having their Ladies Away Day at Mendip! The first visiting team came from Farrington Park, assisted by Mendip member, Fran Davies, who scored 71 points, followed by a team from Came Down, who scored 70, and a further team from Farrington, with 67 points. The winning Mendip team, with 71 points, was Carol Curtis, Di Stanton and Anita Butcher, with, in second position, Vi Hayes, Jenny Merrett and Karen Richards, with 67, and in third spot, Patricia Rawlins, Rachael Farthing and Anne Hopkins, with 64.
A severely weakened Ladies A Team in the Alliance league, now operating in the fiercely competitive Division One, came up against strong opposition from Bristol and Clifton and went down to a heavy defeat. The Ladies friendly team also tasted defeat when away to Wedmore, losing a close run affair, 2–3.Winning pairings were Carol Mosley and Joan Hayes and Chris Williams and Wendy Norman.
The Ladies B Team in Division Four of the Ladies Alliance also met with defeat in a very close match, 6–8, when away at Thornbury. There were wins for Vi Hayes, Sandy Nott and Chris Olds. Honours even after Mendip had beaten Thornbury by the same scoreline in the home fixture.
67 of Mendip's Seniors competed in the Bill Smith Cup on a blustery, but dry day. After a close-run affair, Selwyn Rees came third, with 38 points, beating Jim Scott on countback, and in second place came John Stembridge, with 39. However, this year's cup winner, after a long time away from the winner's enclosure, was veteran Bob Clark, these days playing at a slower pace than hitherto, with a splendid forty points.
