FIREBRANDS 3 MENDIP LADIES 2nds 1

Mendip Ladies travelled to Clevedon on Saturday to face Firebrands, who currently sit third in the League.

With just one goal separating the teams in the previous encounter, tt was all to play for.

Mendip started well and put pressure on the Firebrands’ defence. Quick passing and great linking play between the forwards and midfield, should have resulted in a number of short corners.

Unfortunately, the umpiring was not on our side – this allowed Firebrands to break away and, with the defence outnumbered, break the deadlock.

The rest of the half continued in the same way, with Mendip constantly pressing the opposition, but seemingly unable to find the back of the net.

Shortly before half-time, Firebrands made it 2-0 against the run of play.

Mendip continued the hard work in the second half, with forwards, Amy McGowen and Connie Glover, putting in some excellent driving runs down the line, but still the goal wouldn’t come.

Firebrands found their third and final goal from a well-worked short-corner and seemed pretty confident that the game was all-but-over.

Not to be deterred, Mendip kept pushing, and were finally rewarded when Connie swept the ball home with thirty seconds remaining.

Another loss, but all players should take credit for an excellent team performance, especially Player of the Match, Jackie Browning, for her commitment and hard work in the midfield.
