Midsomer Norton Rugby Club held their early season re-union lunch on Saturday the 23rd at Norton Down with former players, friends, benefactors, sponsors and supporters attending.

MNRFC are looking forward to another successful year on the pitch, despite going down narrowly to Clevedon on the day, 34-36.

The Club continues to field three teams and fixtures can be found on the Club’s website: https://midsomernortonrfc.rfu.club. Tom Fear has moved on (for now) and Joe Button takes over as 1stXV captain with James Abbot as vice captain and Dave Sawkins helping out. Martin Blackmore continues as head coach.

Matthew “Scruff” Denning will lead the 2nd XV with Joe Knight as vice-captain, while Ian Tiley is still working his ‘magic’ with the 3rd team, but now as vice-captain, and Andy Crooks becomes captain.

All are successfully helping our many young players from the Colts section to settle into adult rugby.

Sunday remains Juniors day and The Down is usually awash with youngsters learning and enjoying the game.

Jonathan Swift and his dedicated team are really pushing the future of the Club.

The General Committee and the Bar and Entertainments Committee continue to work hard keeping the Club up to scratch and functioning efficiently.

The Mayor of Midsomer Norton, Cllr Gordon Mackay was invited to the re-union along with Councillor Tim Wells and Councillor Lynda Robertson: “My two eldest sons play junior rugby at Midsomer Norton and I have such great respect for the club and especially the coaching staff.

“It’s not just rugby they learn, but discipline and respect.”

“It’s a real pleasure meeting some past players such as the legendary Terry Moon who played rugby at a very high level, including helping Midsomer Norton win the Somerset Cup on two occasions, in 1980 and 1990.”
