Clevedon 21 v Midsomer Norton 26

Clevedon started strong and put Norton under pressure resulting in a lineout near Norton’s 22 early on in the game.

The lineout resulted in a stationary maul that looked to be heading nowhere until the Clevedon scrum half realised that the visitors had completely forgotten about the blindside and sniped over, not quite believing his luck.

Solid set-piece play and strong running brought Norton back into the game and from close in, Taylor crashed over and converted his own score. From a scrum in Clevedon’s 22, Harry Smith scored in the corner after Joe

Button got a smart pass away from the base of the scrum.

Clevedon got back into the game through capitalising on Norton’s lack of care in keeping hold of the ball and unwillingness to play a simple game.

When Norton put phases together they were clearly a more dangerous side and Murphy snaked his way through to increase the lead before Connor Schuster capped a Man of the Match performance with a try of his own. Clevedon scored at the death, but there was no time for them to close the gap further as the referee blew for full time.

The Thirds travelled to Glastonbury on

Saturday for what proved to be a very enjoyable game of rugby. Despite a late cry-off which saw them playing with fourteen men, Norton really stuck to their task.

The pack were competitive throughout and held the upper hand in the scrum. Tor were at their most dangerous in the open spaces and they scored four first half tries as they punished any Norton errors.

Norton did score a good try of their own, however when centre, Paul Comber, charged up the blind side his surging run was just stopped short but flanker, Alex Holborn was on hand to take the pass and go over. Centre, Charlie Sleigh, added the conversion.

Half time saw Norton trailing 26–7. Their second half cause wasn’t helped when they lost full back, Ronnell Tayag, to a bad ankle injury. The club wishes him a speedy recovery. Credit to Tor, they lent Norton a player to keep the game competitive.

Unfortunately, despite some sterling defence, Norton couldn’t keep Tor out and they added two further tries. Norton did, however, finish the game in the ascendancy.

Veteran props, Dave Williams and Tim Chivers rolled back the years as they pushed the opposition over their own line from a five metre scrum. Tor infringed and the referee awarded a penalty try to leave the final score at 40–14 Steve Blackmore
