It was one last appearance of the summer wardrobe for members of Somer AC Running Club, as a good showing of their senior members gathered for their annual cross country fancy dress.
This years’ theme was “On The Beach”. So if any Journal readers were the confused motorists and dog walkers that encountered a gaggle of lifeguards, swimmers, and stereotypical British tourists carrying an inflatable shark… now you know why.
Congregating at Farrington Golf Club, 30 Somer members ran across our superb Somerset countryside, covering about 10 miles whilst navigating from pub to pub. After the initial leg and a rest stop at the Farrington Inn, it was a long run across the footpaths and byways to the lunch break at Hinton Blewitt’s Ring of Bells.
Another long run saw the group make their way East and into Temple Cloud. The staff at the Temple Inn were kindly allowed to take time out to judge the fancy dress competition. This years’ winners were Paul Newman in full lobster outfit, whilst Lucy Turner turned her creative hands to become a pineapple for the day.
The route then took the group past the old Clutton Workhouse before heading towards the final stop at the Old Station in Hallatrow. A final run across the fields to Farrington Gurney and the final challenging climb back to the Golf Club. Somer Runners would like to pass their thanks to all the establishments who accommodated them, and to those motorists who sounded their horns.
Somer AC Running Club meet every Tues/Thurs at 7.15pm at the Centurion Hotel in Westfield.
