Sam, together with Stuart Disney Mendip’s Golf Director recently held a very successful Golf Clinic concentrating on wedge play. The twelve participants were very complimentary regarding its content and having sold out by the end of day one of advertising, the second clinic takes place this week.

A full field took part in Mendip’s 4bbb Open event, the majority of whom were visiting golfers. Played in a strong and very difficult northerly wind, the overall winners were Mendip member Kevin Mattock and his Burnham and Berrow guest who scored an outstanding forty five points. First visitors prize went to a pairing from West Wilts with forty three points with a Oake Manor/Wheathill pair second with forty two on countback from another West Wilts pair. Best Members Team were Steve Turner and John Ellis with thirty nine points.

The annual Berkeley Hall Foursomes event saw the highest entry for many years. Always a difficult format, scoring again proved testing. However, the eventual winners were Chairman of Competitions Ryan Sainsbury playing with his regular partner, Clive Copp who had a net sixty nine winning only after countback from Wayne Black and Kelvin Lum. Jack Hayes and Tony Taylor were third with seventy and Ian Hall and David Braithwaite were fourth with seventy one. The event saw the first Hole in One recorded on the new eighteenth hole. This honour went to Alan O’Leary, very well done Alan!

The Ladies ICL team suffered a narrow defeat at home to Wheathill, 3-4. Wins for Mendip came from Lynn Cox, Alison Kay and Chris Williams. The Alliance A Team however had a fine 10-4 home win over Bristol and Clifton with Lynn Cox again successful together with Aimee Sawyer, Jinhee Page, Lynne Vowles with Fran Davies and Jenny Merrett both gaining halves. The Alliance B Team went down to a narrow defeat when visiting Long Ashton. Faced with lightening quick greens that favoured the home team, nevertheless 5-9 was not a bad result with wins for Jenny Merrett, Anita Butcher and Lulu Carolan. The event also gave valuable match experience to newcomers Sue Alcock and Helen Roberts. At the half way stage the team are second in their division.

Mendip were delighted to host the Somerset Girls Championships. With the course in Top Order and gaining strong compliments from the County Organisers, the scoring nevertheless proved difficult with the continuing strong northerly wind. The winner with an outstanding 5 over Par for the thirty six holes was Frankie Dezis from Farrington Golf Club. There were two Mendip girls competing, Ellen Reakes who came third and Ffion Richardson seventh. Polly Jones also from Mendip came fourth in the 18 hole event.

Nearest the Pin went to Rob Cook with Henry Banks second and Tony Scott third.

The Seniors Avalon Team went down 1-4 to a strong Enmore Team with their sole win coming from Kevin Carmody/Simon Wynn. The Friendly Team followed up their recent run of seven successive wins with visits to Worlebury and Bath. At the former they lost 1½-4½, a win coming from John Scott/Andy Humphries and a half from Tony Scott/Martin Sutherland. At Bath they again went down 2-4 with wins from Nigel Cheshire/Jim Scott and Colin Davies/John Ellis. Tony Williams
