WRITHLINGTON MEN’S 1sts 0 CLEEVE HILL 2nds 10
Writhlington welcomed the return of two young guns, Matt Alexander and Tom Hunt, with the rest of the youthful team made up of Luis Jauregui and Patrick Lodge.
Playing Cleeve Hill Seconds, on what can only be described as the slowest hard court ever, winning the point before an epic rally was in short supply.
Matt and Pat played Paul and Gary. The Writhlington duo made a slow start, but Matt’s unbelievable net play levelled the match 2-6, 6-3. Going into the third set, the Cleeve Hill pair raised their serving games and won, 6-3.
Meanwhile, Tom and Luis were playing Neil and Lee. A tough scoreline as every game and point seemed close but greater consistency meant a 6-0, 6-1 win for Cleeve Hill.
In the reverse matches, it was the same story as the first – Luis and Tom having some great rallies but losing 6-1, 6-0 and Matt and Pat lost in three sets.
Matt will sadly be out for six weeks following an injury he had before the start of the fixture. He will be missed! Let’s hope for a speedy recovery.
WRITHLINGTON MEN’S 2nds 4 LAKEVIEW 6
Chris and Sam paired up and played out of their skins all through the evening, and managed to win both rubbers in champ tiebreaks against very decent (and very fair) opposition.
The pressure on young Sam in the tiebreaks was enormous, but his consistent crosscourts and running to get to everything made him the star of the night! Scores were 7-6, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7) versus Fred/Ryan, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5) versus Raj/John.
Graham and Andy had another ‘mare of a night, winning the first set but that was it for the evening. We got into great positions in the rallies, then failed to put the ball away. It’s purely mental – a life coach is needed rather than a tennis coach! Scores were 6-4, 3-6, 0-1 (10-12) versus Raj/John, and 4-6, 3-6 versus Fred/Ryan. Huge disappointment that we could not support Chris and Sam well enough to get an overall win.
So Lakeview got the win overall due to a 6-5 set advantage. The match was played in good spirit.
WRITHLINGTON LADIES 1sts 4 KINGS LAWN 1sts 6
Mandy and Ces took on Emily and Ellie from Kings. The match was highly competitive, with all games going to deuce.
We just couldn’t quite convert all the break points that we had gained. Some great rallies were had at the baseline, as well as at the net by all four players. It was a very enjoyable match, even though we lost 3-6, 2-6.
The second match against Connie and Anna was, again, a well-fought match. We won 6-0, 6-4. The first-time pairing of Alex and Eleanor got off to a great start, winning 6-2, 6-4. A tougher second match for them in a very well-contested game, but sadly lost by 3-6, 0-6.
WRITHLINGTON LADIES 2nds 8 KINGS 3rds 2
The Ladies Second team had their first win of the season against Kings Thirds.
It was an enjoyable and competitive match which saw the first pair of Kelly and Rachel win both their rubbers, and the second pair of Janie and Louise narrowly losing one of their rubbers, in an exciting third-set championship tie-break. An overall win of 8-2 has improved our confidence in Division Three, where we hope to stay come the end of the season.
