A MOTHER and her son are to run 5km in the dark for Royal United Hospitals (RUH) Bath.

Emily Smith, from Bath, and her 7-year-old son are taking part in the Glow Run on October 16 after a visit to the hospital with her daughter this summer.

In August, Emily’s 3-year-old was rushed to Accident and Emergency at the RUH with a broken arm, which she needed an operation.

Emily described how kind the staff were, including the X-ray team allowing her to stay sitting with her daughter, A&E staff giving her daughter stickers, and the Theatres staff allowing her to climb into the bed with her daughter as she was taken in for her surgery.

She said: “Every single member of staff we met made me feel so safe, reassured, completely normal for being so emotional about her, and they went out of their way to support us as a family.”

Emily has decided to give back by taking part in the Glow Run “because the staff work so hard, and a smile goes such a long way when you’re in such a state of emotional turmoil.”

The Glow Run is a family-friendly fun run organised by RUHX, official NHS charity of the RUH Bath.

With a sunset 2K or fully after-dark 5K to choose from, participants can run, walk, dance or jog around the lit-up course at Odd Down Sports Ground.

A spokesperson said: “Whether you’re a regular Parkrunner, looking for ways to get the family more active, or you just want to do something different to support your hospital, the Glow Run is for everyone.

“Every penny raised at the event will help to ensure all patients at the RUH continue to receive extra extraordinary care like Emily’s daughter.”

Tickets cost £10 for adults and £7.50 for children and are available on the RUHX website.
