Mystery Photograph: A street from days gone by, but where?

CAN you guess where this week’s Mystery Photograph was taken?

Each week, the Journal invites readers to identify a historic location from days gone by.

Last week we had difficulty pinning down the picture of The Old Star Inn at Tunley; luckily for us, we now have evidence the Old Star Inn did in fact exist in Tunley although the building is no more.

Among others Susan Millen wrote in: “This is indeed of the Star Inn which once stood on the edge of Tunley Village, and was taken in 1928.

“The Star Inn was demolished circa 1959/1960 to allow for the road (B3115) leading down over the hill to Camerton to be straightened and widened, and the road was built over the cellar of the pub.

“A member of the Arnold family, who were the last landlords of the Star Inn before it was demolished, still lives in Tunley and has photographs identical to the one which was published.”

We had many guesses for last week’s picture including Tony Clarke who guessed it to be the “Tin Shed in Church Road in Peasedown St John” and said it went from being a church to the changing room for Peasedown St John Athletic Football Club.

Dave Button emailed in: “I believe the mystery photograph in this week's journal is the old St Joseph's Church on Bath Road in Peasedown St John.”

Dave Stone got in touch again and said: “This weeks photograph is The Old Catholic Church in Peasedown, demolished many years ago.”

Mike Gregory added: “I believe that it’s St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Ashgrove, Peasedown which changed to St Joseph’s Social Club in the 60s.

“My Mum and Dad (Stan and May Gregory) took over from Mike and Audrey and ran it until it was pulled down and a new church was built in its place.”

Thanks Mike, no doubting this one, it was indeed St Joseph’s Church, Peasedown St John.
