A little girl who cannot walk was able to go up and talk to Father Christmas without help from her parents for the very first time last weekend.
Isabel Freeman, known as Issy, is nearly three and has Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) type two, a rare condition which affects the growth and strength of her muscles. SMA has affected Issy’s ability to walk, sit or crawl.
Now Christmas is near, Issy, from Midsomer Norton, has managed to do something she’s never been able to do before – go up to Father Christmas by herself to tell him her wishes for presents under the tree.
Due to her disability, Issy used to rely on her mum and dad to move her around and couldn’t choose where she wanted to go. But her new Wizzybug powered wheelchair allows her to play, explore and move independently.
Issy’s mum, Karen, is thrilled that her daughter can now gain some freedom and movement skills, thanks to the free Wizzybug from Bath charity, Designability.
She said: “Designability have given us a light at the end of the tunnel with the Wizzybug. It’s the first chance Issy’s had to have a bit of independence.
“We’ve had a really good year and meeting Father Christmas has really topped it off for us.”
The family were invited on a special festive visit to Dobbies Garden Centre in Shepton Mallet so that Issy could meet and speak with the man himself – Father Christmas.
Geoff Hedley, General Manager at Dobbies, said: “I’m delighted we have been able to help Issy meet Santa on her own for the very first time.
“Visiting the grotto is always an exciting and magical experience for children, so it was really special to be able to ensure Issy could join in and experience this.”
