It was a busy start to the week for Norwest, when we welcomed teams from Prattens and Purnell to our green for the start of this year’s Charity Floodlight League.
As always, the atmosphere was cracking, as the chaps took to the green for an evening of highly-competitive but thoroughly enjoyable bowls. After the game, it was into the clubhouse to round off the evening with hot dogs, pasties, a go on the tombola and a few drinks, all accompanied by lots of very merry banter. Purnell won this first game, but overall everyone who takes part in the league is a winner.
Continuing with the Charity League on Thursday was Norwest’s turn for their first fixture when they visited Purnell, where they met the chaps from Paulton. Norwest took the honours, winning four rinks to one after yet another great game.
There were no County League games this Saturday, so the lads enjoyed a more relaxed game when they were joined on our green by bowlers from Yeovil. Regrettably, the score of 100 to 64 in Norwest’s favour somewhat belied the fact that it was a ‘friendly’ game. Unfortunately, due to lack of players, the Wednesday Men’s friendly game against Stothert and Pitt was cancelled, as was the Sunday mixed game against Wilton.
Two Wild League games for our girls this week: the first, on Tuesday, was away at Frome Selwood, where they suffered their first defeat of the week, getting just one of the twelve points up for grabs. The second, on Thursday, was at home to Wyrral Park, and another loss – but at least we doubled our score by taking two points.
This coming Sunday, 2nd September, we will be playing the first game in what we hope will be an annual fixture for the Anne Wilkinson Memorial Trophy. This is to be played as a knockout competition, with players taking turns at each playing position.
A couple of weeks ago, I gave out information about this competition, saying it would be capped at 28 players. This, I’m pleased to say, is not the case, so there’s still a chance for you to get your name down if you’d like to participate. It will be an enjoyable but bittersweet afternoon, as we all remember Anne, our dear friend and fellow Norwester.
