SHAYNE Smith of Norton Radstock Amateur Boxing Club has been crowned Global Glove Development Box Cup Champion at 44kgs.
Boxing in the final against Oscar Pietrzak of Team Singys ABC of Colne, Lancashire, Shayne started his quest with a confident attitude thumping through his opponents defences with a stiff jab and quick combinations.
Circling his rival with good footwork, Shayne made Oscar miss repeatedly with good head movement and quick counter punching. Without having to change anything, he was instructed to keep the work-rate the same in rounds two and three.
At the bouts conclusion both boys give a sporting hug to each other as the crowd waited for the result. After three dominant rounds, Shayne was awarded a clear unanimous win and the title of Box Cup champion.
Sean Jenkins, head coach of Norton Radstock Amateur Boxing Club, was full of praise for Shayne after the bout. He said: “Travelling up to Bolton and watching him box so composed with confidence, balance and determination was a pleasure for me as his coach.
“Just two weeks ago the lad was in bed for three days with a really nasty viral infection that took a lot out of him, but like the determined trooper he is, he was back in the gym determined not to miss this competition."
“To say I'm immensely proud of him is a big understatement considering what he’s been through and the hard work he’s put into his training. We go again in the Midlands Box Cup and I know he'll be training hard to bring that Gold home to add to his growing collection."
