Spears’ first home game of 2016/2017 saw the squad host Priory. The game started slowly for both teams, with the cold air causing cold hands to drop a few balls. However, Spears were the quicker to pick up these loose balls, sending them swiftly in to Rebecca and Leela in the shooting circle, who with their usual
accuracy, repeatedly found the goal. Spears took an early lead closing the quarter out 12–9.
The second quarter started much stronger for Spears, with Harriet on in defence, Priory struggled to find the attacking circle with many of their plays intercepted. Milly and Shannon worked hard to push the ball forwards, with accurate and strong passes into the awaiting Spears shooters. Spears were pushing on hard, leaving Priory in their wake. The first half closed out 26–13 to Spears.
Taking full advantage of their rotational squad, Spears moved Kelly to WA for the third quarter, this switch further rocked the away side who struggled to contain the sharp passes Spears were sending into their shooters. The pace quickened and Priory were unable to keep up with play. Quarter three ended 35–16 to Spears.
The final quarter saw the home side continue to maintain their level of play. Spears’ defence were outstanding, any attacking play was quickly shut down by Amy and Kim who then provided support to their attacking counterparts. With the home crowd cheering loudly from the side-lines, Spears romped home with a comfortable win, 46–20.
