A fun-filled weekend was organised to celebrate 125 years for Wells Golf Club. Green staff had worked hard on the layout of the old course, which caused the golfers to think. Alan and his team had planned hog roasts and barbecues for the evenings and the stage was set for everyone to enjoy themselves.

The first day’s competition was a Bowmaker, with Tony Blunden, Geoff Dyer and M. Edgar winning with an amazing 88 points, followed by G. Ramsell, Ron Davey and Ian Mills with 86 points on countback. The highlight of the day was Nick Wilson playing a hole-in-one, expertly rolling the ball down the slope and onto the green on the signature tenth hole. The best Ladies/Mixed team was Janette Norris, Linda Wright and Chris Gee.

The second day was a Four Ball Better Ball, with B. Marcham and R. Gould first with 45 points on countback, and G. Spinks/Ken Scadden in second place. In fact, seven teams had 45 points! The first Ladies/Mixed team were Peter and Diane Ramsay.

John Chillington, President, thanked everyone for making it a celebration to remember, including the starters, ladies in the green room, the pro-shop, the caterers and the members.

The successful Seniors’ Wells pairings at Wedmore were Peter Leverick and Len Sweales, Graham Bingham and Piers Dalby, Nick Wilson and Ron Hancock, and also George White and Pete Boehm, who made his Seniors’ debut. Steve Rowse and Mike Gee halved their game, while Mike Hiles made his first appearance in a Seniors’ match.

At home to Farrington, Mike Gee and Jock McKinven, Steve Bocquet and Dave Couzens and Graham Bingham and Ron Hancock all won. Bingham had played a President’s Cup match beforehand, but came off after 38 holes, looking as fresh as when he started! There were three halved matches from Glyn Hallett and John Moxon, Peter Leverick and Piers Dalby, and Nick Wilson and Tony Harrison.

Glynis Slater won the Dickenson Medal with a cool nett-74, and Barbara Harris was first in the Bronze Division.

On a blisteringly hot afternoon, the Stragglers travelled to Saltford for this popular fixture – John Hockey and Paul Hembury, Richard Sheard and Bill Levell halving their matches. John Baker and Scott Barrett battled hard and Adam Holliday and Gary Leigh also fought to the end. Mark Edgell and Guy Timson had a very tight match and halved it.
