A late call-up to join the Wyvern Trophy competition, run by Somerset County Golf, for Farrington Park’s Men’s team, brought great success for the Fourball of Men’s Club Captain, Shane Phelps, Tom Snelling, Jackson Carey and Jack Broadway.

They amassed a winning score of 94 points to win the cup. Many congratulations to the team.

A great day’s golf was enjoyed by the travelling Farrington Park members when they played in scorching sunshine at the Dorset Golf and Country Club. They were playing for the prestigious trophy ‘The Order of the Horn’, a Stableford competition organised by Men’s Captain, Shane Phelps, for his Captain’s Away Day.

The trophy is won by the player who amasses the best Stableford score. There were prizes for the ‘nearest the pin’, ‘nearest the pin in two shots’ and for the ‘longest drive’. Some good golf was played by all the competitors, with plenty of beverages keeping them hydrated in the summer heat. Third place went to Jack Vowell with forty points, Danny Farnen’s 41 points took second place, but the outstanding round of the day was 46 points, scored by Mike Hillier to win ‘The Order of the Horn’ trophy.

Shane Phelps thanked everyone for their support of his Away Day, including the staff of the Dorset Golf and Country Club. Various fines were levied throughout the day for misdemeanours like “three-putting” or not getting out of a bunker with a first shot. The fines amounted to £251 for the joint-Captains’ charity, Hannah’s Willberry Wonder Pony.

With the unusual British Summer continuing to bake everything in sight, it is testament to the dedicated greenkeeping staff at Farrington Park that the course continues to be in great shape.

The Committee Cup, now celebrating its 20th Anniversary, was donated to the Seniors’ Section by Senior member, Dave Taylor. Some excellent scoring was achieved in the playing of this year’s competition. Rob Thain, with a successful defence of the trophy which he also won last year, scored 42 points and a handicap cut of two shots for his troubles.

A fairly small field of 34 Ladies took part in the Four-Ball Better Ball Ahlberg Assiette competition, playing off 90% of handicap. Temperatures were more bearable and the course was playing well after the good rains.

Last year’s winners, Lally Gibson and Carol King, thought they might have been in with a chance with 43 points, but this was only good enough for fourth place. In third place were Lo Dallocco and June Symonds with 44 points, and a countback had to be made to determine who took the top spot.

Sue Barnes and Denise Baker peaked a little too early with 27 points on the front, which meant the trophy went to Ladies’ Captain Rosi Brown and her playing partner, Sandra Hares, who had a better back nine. Both pairs had a total of 46 points. Lin Papas had a two on the 10th and Peggy Edwards also had a two on the 15th.
