The Farrington Park Ladies’ Open was held on the 27th July. Lady golfers from all over the south west ventured over to Farrington Park Golf Club to take part in the 3 ball bow maker.
The day was unsettled weather wise for the 29 teams that entered. Sunny spells interspersed with heavy showers, did not dampen the ladies’ spirits. This year the Ladies Committee meticulously planned a day to remember for home players and visitors. The ladies could enjoy an array of scrumptious cakes with their Pimms when they visited the half-way hut, and in the main room there were stalls where they could purchase golf clothing to even having their feet massaged. This all before enjoying their yummy meal while waiting for the presentation.
Lady Captain Pauline Young assisted by her Vice-Captain Rosi Brown, thanked all that had helped to make the day special for everyone, with a special thank you to Fiona Hassard and Bridget Rylance, who had planned the day so perfectly. The winners of the Farrington Park Ladies’ Open were as follows – Overall winners, June Symonds, Clare Salter and Carol King, with 78 points on count back. First Visitors, Linda McHugh, Liz Brealey and Sue Morton-Jenkins (Bath Sham), also with 78 points. First Home, Angela Hudd, Sharman Bradshaw and Sandra Gibbs (Bristol and Clifton), with 75 points. The two spot winners were Yvonne Bate (Mendip Spring) on the Tenth and Angela Hudd (Farrington Park).
The following week on August 3rd, was the Ahlberg Assiette, a Better Ball competition. With many ladies away playing at Opens, the field was small. Eighteen pairs however still entered and enjoyed a pleasant summer’s day. Lady Captain, Pauline Young, teased the winners, Lally Gibson and Carol King, who have won, as a pair, their third competition in a row. Despite giving both a handicap cut, there was no stopping the duo. The results were as follows – First, Lally Gibson and Carol King, with 37 points on count back, Second, also with 37 points, Bobby Appleby; Third were Jackie Walker and Gail Proctor, with 36 points, and equal Fourth were Min Woodward and Cynthia Miller, and June Symonds and Clare Salter, both teams with 35 points.
