Sixty home and visiting Ladies in teams of three competed in this Bowmaker on a wet, windy and cold day.

Those with later tee times fared better as the rain cleared by about 1 p.m. With three scores to count on the par-3s and two scores on other holes a team score of eighty and up would be expected. However, the greens were still challenging after a downpour on Wednesday washed much of the sand out of the tined greens and the weather early on made good scores difficult to achieve.

The overall winners, with a very creditable score of 80, were the home team of Rosi Brown, Jackie Hobbs and Jenny Ahlberg. The Long Sutton team of Joanna Cook, Denise Tombun and Aidien Roche won the visitors’ first prize with another excellent score of 79 points.

Fiona Hassard, Carol King and Lally Gibson won the first members’ team prize with seventy points on countback from the second members’ team, Brenda Michael, Jayne Brown and Viv Dixon. The second visitors’ team were Hilary Marsh, Sue Dix and Jackie Hatton from Chippenham, with 68 points.

Nearest the pin on the 5th was won by Jackie Hatton and on the 10th by Carol King. Two spots were achieved by Terri O’Shea (5th), Judith Rowsell (5th, from Wheathill), Lally Gibson (15th) and Jenny Ahlberg (15th).

The Prize Draw in support of the Captain’s Charity, Dorothy House, had the first prize of £30 going to Suzanne Young, with £20 going to Marjorie Robinson in second place and £10 to third place winner, Linda Rogers. £158 was raised for Dorothy House, so thank you to everyone who entered.

Finally a huge thank you to Bobby Appleby (Starter) and Rob Porter (ball-spotter) who were out for hours in the worst of the weather; to Marjorie Robinson on the sign-in desk and draw; and to Lesley Stone for organising and running the halfway house assisted by Sylvia Hudd.

There was a delicious range of cakes and savouries made and donated by many members and extremely welcome to cold, tired golfers. Many thanks also to Julie Toogood, who did a bit of everything before playing at 12.50 p.m., and to Jon Calway in the Pro Shop, who ran the competition having spent fourteen hours the day before running the Seniors’ Open.
