The Seniors’ Captain’s Away Day took place at Yeovil Golf Club.
Fine weather added to the enjoyment of this competition with 51 entrants playing on an excellent course which tested most of the players. This was not the case, however, for Terry Pearce, who amassed a magnificent 46 stableford points. Along with Mike Metcalfe and John Chillington, they were the clear team winners with a Bowmaker score of 92.
Runners-up for the team prize were Nick Carter, Tony Duffin and Tony Harrison, with a total of 82 points. In third place were Dave Szymanski, Glyn Hallett and Ian Mills. The individual first prize went to Bill McCollum with 43 points; second was Martin Barnes with 37 points, and Nick Poore came in third at 36 points. The nearest the pins were won by Trevor Cook on the second and Dave Szymanski on the 18th (in two).
A few very keen golfers braved the awful weather to contest the Men’s Daily Mail Foursomes. The honour of representing Wells in the next round goes to Mark and James Stainer who won the event with a quite outstanding nett 65.
Distant runners-up were Justin Chadburn and Danny Wyrwoll with a nett 75.
There was only the one 2 scored by Guy Timson and Kevin Saunders.
The Seniors’ section completed their final friendly match at Weston-super-Mare. This was a win for Weston, 4½ to 2½. The final tally after 29 home and away matches was 9 wins, 13 losses and 7 matches halved.
The Ladies’ Roger’s Cup team played well in the early rounds to reach the Semi-Final which was played at Farrington. It was a close-run match with the Wedmore team winning just one more game than Wells.
