THERE was a large turnout for the annual Puttsomes event in the Seniors section of Fosseway Golf Club - and it proved a successful one for Rob Wells and his partner Joan Hayes.

This is the competition when the gents play all the shots to the green and the ladies do the putting. The winning pair carried off the Joe Hawkins Cup with a nett score over the 9 holes of 34.5.

In second place came Mike Coles and his partner Diane with a nett score of 35 with Paul Ellis and Terri third with a nett score of 35.5.

Pauline Brixey won the prize for the individual golfer’s best score (16.5) while a visitor from South Shields, Julie, playing with Pauline’s husband Steve carried away the award for the best non-golfer with 17 putts.

Members of the Seniors endured a testing day for their away day visit to Lansdown Golf Club on what proved to be one of the hottest days in British history. Mike Coles, however, thrived in the boiling conditions, winning the Stableford event with an impressive 45 points. In second place came Malcolm Tucker with 43 points, beating third placed Alan Jones on countback. Pauline Brixey won the prize for the longest drive with Anthony Gregory carrying off the award for nearest the pin.

Conditions were totally different for the Mark Bridges Cup with heavy rain causing many participants to call it a day early on in their rounds. Eleven hardy souls kept going in the difficult conditions to the end and Rob Wells continued his good form, winning the Murphy’s Stableford with 30 points. One point behind in second place came Paul Spillane with Allen Cheney in third spot on 28 points.
