THE Seniors section of Fosseway Golf Club made a promising start to their first season in the Avalon Seniors League but were narrowly beaten 3-2 away to Cannington.
New skipper Andy Flagg led the way. registering a 6&4 victory together with his partner Allen Cheney while Chris Appleton and Malcolm Emery finished 2 up. Against strong opposition Steve Brixey and Mike Weeks lost 6&4 , Paul Trigg and Paul Ellis were beaten 5&4 and Martyn Cuer and Phil Winsley concluded a close contest 2 down.
There was a close finish to the Clem Byrne Triples Stableford with countback needed to establish the winners. In the end Flagg, Mike Ricketts and Bob Townsend took the honours with 72 points, beating off the challenge of Cheney, Weeks and Pete Young, who also had 72. Winsley, Anthony Gregory and Cyril Blacker were third a further point back.
The April Seniors medal saw the introduction of two divisions. In Division 1 Pat Cray won the competition with a nett 68. He was followed by Trigg (nett 70) and Cuer who also had 70 but was beaten on countback. Alan Jones made a welcome return fron injury to win Division 2 with nett 71. John Cooper was second with nett 72 with Paul Ellis third (nett 73).
Countback was also needed to decide the winner of the Don Shearn Trophy. Malcolm Tucker and new member Steve Parsons came in with 35 Stableford points but Tucker’s final nine holes of 20 points saw him take first place. Blacker and Howard Nowell both amassed 34 points with Blacker earning third place on countback.
Members of the seniors group were sad to learn of the death of former treasurer Colin Moon. Colin was a popular player for many years but had not enjoyed good health for some time. The club send sincere condolences to the family.
