The Seniors’ section of Fosseway Golf Club celebrated another enjoyable season with a Presentation Lunch at the Centurion Hotel, Midsomer Norton.

It was an event tinged with sadness, however, following the sudden death of popular member, Henry Thomas, just days before the lunch. Tributes were paid by Seniors’ Captain, Gerry Rowell, to Henry and John Ticehurst, who had passed away earlier in the year, and a minute’s silence was observed.

On the playing side, Rowell said it had not been a great season for the Seniors. In social matches, they had won seven, lost twelve and drew two. The Rose Bowl had seen the team lose 4-1 to Stockwood Vale at Sham Castle with Roger Parfitt, from the main club, joining up with Malcolm Tucker to win the solitary game. He said he hoped that next year, other main club members would make themselves available to help the Seniors become more competitive.

The Player of the Year award for the Roger Tabb Trophy went to Malcolm Tucker, with John Waters winning the Club Championship for the Rupert Moore Cup, beating Allen Cheney in the Final. Vice-Captain, Martyn Cuer, who retained the Don Shearn Cup, was top in the gross section of the Winter Eclectic, with Graham Edgell winner of the nett section.

Mike Ricketts finished in top place in both the Winter League and the Summer Eclectic gross, with Tucker winning the nett award for the Summer Eclectic and the Eric James Cup. Mike Weeks, who enjoyed a successful first season with the Seniors, claimed the Captain’s Trophy and the Mark Bridges Cup. Another newcomer, Alan White, won the Rod Bruce Scratch Championship Cup, while Cyril Blacker took away the Colin Eaton Vase in the three-club challenge.

Cheney captured the Ted Cottle Over-70s trophy, with John Bendle the victor in the John Appleton trophy event for Over-75s. Jack Curtis was the star at the Seniors’ Open as the top Fosseway competitor, while Geoff and Linda Hallett won the Joe Hawkins Mixed Puttsomes for the third time in four years.

At the close of the presentations, it was announced that life memberships have been awarded to Geoff Weeks, Colin Moon and Alan Pugh, alongside Geoff Broadway.
