This week’s introduction is the Junior Captain Sam Hughes. San is aged 15 and is currently playing off a 9.6 handicap. He moved to the area from Surrey and is schooling at Millfield. His father Roy is also a Mendip member.

The popular Spring Open Bowmaker saw 69 entrants and the course received many plaudits from visitors, despite the continuing dreary weather. The winning team with 82 points came from a combination of Ogbourne Down/The Players/North Wilts members. A Cricket St Thomas Team came second with 78 after a countback leaving a Henbury Team third. George Morgan, R Claridge and T Dudbridge won the best Member’s prize.

The Junior Team recorded an excellent 2-1 victory over Wells to reach the Semi Finals of the Somerset Junior KO Cup, with wins from Sam Hughes and Connie Cox.

Nearest the Pin went to Reuben Treasure with Gary Quin second and Andy Griffiths third.

The Avalon A Team had a fine 4-1 against Vivary ( Match result 10-3). Wins for Dani Annable-Manzaneda/Tom Black, Tom Chapman/Lee Britten, Phil Leadbeater/David Jukes and Dan Allen/Spencer Pocock.

A welcome to new Mendip member Lee Britten who was making his debut. The Avalon C Team went down to a narrow 2-3 loss when visiting Oake. Wins for Michal Rokitowski (making his debut)/Malcolm Srawley, Gary Hollister (also making his debut)/John Ellis. Joe Gibbs was also making his debut.

Thirty six ladies played in the 4bbb which saw a win for Allison Rumming/Lilian Peel with 40 points. Vi Hayes/Jean Padfield were second with 39 and Nola Russell/Sally Humphries were third with 38. The 9 hole event saw a win for new member Ann Lofts, playing off 9 who scored 22 points, well done Ann. The Ladies Alliance A on a very wet day entertained Mendip Spring and ran out 8-6 winners. Wins from Lady Captain Aimee Sawyer, Jenny Merrett, Edwina Willis and Lynn Cox. New Member Ann Loft was making her debut. The B Team narrowly went down 6-8 at Saltford with wins from Jenny Merrett, Jo Espley and Chris Down.

The Seniors Team played in the Somerset Scratch Foursomes KO and managed a close 3-2 win over Worlebury to progress to the next round. It could have been a wider margin win as both lost matches were surprisingly on the 18th! The Seniors Friendly Team have been very busy this past 10 days. A close 2½ - 3½ defeat from their away fixture with Yeovil was followed by a 2-4 defeat when visiting Taunton & Pickeridge. However, from their third away match they achieved an excellent 5-1 win when visiting Wells.

Graham Bingham, another new Member, made his debut in the Taunton & Pickeridge match and New Senior Paul Godwin managed a winning debut against Wells. Seniors Captain Robert Miller and Team Captain Tony Scott both managed two wins from the three matches as did Jim Scott.
