With the Festive season now behind us, golf at Mendip moves into 2019. The Course is in excellent condition and the greens are looking in first-rate order, a far cry from twelve months ago.
The Greens staff have been particularly active over the past two months with their bunker re-development programme, and the results are very impressive indeed.
The Pro Shop continue to encourage competitive golf through the winter period, with competitions most weekends. The Mens’ Stableford was won by Will Waddington with an excellent 39 points, with S. Thatcher second with 37 and J. Harris third with 36, beating Simon Wynn and Simon Grant on countback.
The Pro Shop four-person bowmaker event was won by P. Leadbeater, Scott and Chris Butland and G. Wood. The Ladies’ winning team was Sandie Roper/Pauline Williams/Julia Phillips, and the mixed prize went to Rob and Sue Needham and David and Lyn Cox.
The Bulls Eye Challenge went to Club Captain, John Shakesby, with fifteen, with regular winner, Tony Taylor, this time in second place. However, the next week, normal service was resumed, with Tony winning from Phil Butcher and Mark Evans.
34 ladies competed in a nine-hole stableford. Silver Division was won by Chris Atkinson with fifteen points, with Libby Bellew second with fourteen points after a three-way countback from Edwina Willis and Jo Espley.
Bronze Division was won by Andrea Williams with seventeen after countback from Sue Alcock; Diane Stanton was third with fifteen, again after countback from Joan Clark. Copper Division was won by Wendy Norman with seventeen from Carol Mosley. Sue Needham was third with fourteen after a four-way countback.
Excellent news from the Ladies Section, when it was announced that thirteen-year-old Ellen Reakes was now included in the main Somerset Ladies Squad for 2019. An excellent achievement for Ellen, who has recently reduced her handicap to nine. Well done, Ellen!
Off the course, 85 members and guests filled the clubhouse for a quiz evening, an event thoroughly enjoyed by all.
