Performance of the Week at Mendip came from the Ladies’ Section, with the team beating Bath 5-2 at Farrington in the County Rogers Cup event.
This progresses Mendip through to the Final, where they will play Mendip Spring. Wins for Mendip came from Aimee Sawyer, Fran Davies, Marian Speed, Jenny Merrett and Jan Fukuyama.
The Centenary Trophy attracted 96 entrants and saw a win for Paul Drew, Danny Middle, Alan O’Leary and Dave Cox with 92 points, just enough to beat Steve Moore, Aaron Mitchell, James Pitchell and Thomas Fooks, who scored 91. The old firm of Brian Smith, Brian Francis, Eric Jordan and John Hargraves were third with 89.
The Mid-Week Stableford was rather spoilt by very wet and windy conditions but nevertheless, in the circumstances, saw a close-run affair. In third place George Hobbs with 36 points after countback from Simon Grant, Paul Drew and Danny Middle. Peter Grafton was second with 37 points after countback, leaving Tom Lowe the winner with a very fine 37 points playing off a two-handicap.
The Ladies’ Arizona Shuffle Mix-Up event saw 33 Ladies playing. Winning with 74 points were a very much in-form Nola Russell, Chris Down and Ann Padley with 74. Marian Speed, Val Dixon and Philippa Brown with 72 were second and Alison Letts, Jenny Merrett and Edwina Willis were third with 71.
Mendip’s qualifier for the County Bronze event was Ann Padley, who, whilst not winning the event, brought home the Lovell Cup for Best Score in her handicap grouping. Well done, Ann.
The Alliance A Team went down 4-10 when entertaining The Kendleshire. Winning for Mendip was Edwina Willis, with Jan Fukuyama and Vi Hayes gaining halves. However, it was closer than the score indicates, with three matches being decided on the 18th.
The Inter-Club Team also went down to a narrow defeat when visiting Taunton & Pickeridge, 3-4. Wins for Mendip came from Libby Bellew, Lynn Cox and Elaine Richardson, who was making her first appearance for the team this season.
There are a whole host of Seniors’ results to report from the past two weeks. The Seniors’ Avalon Team visited Worlebury on a very windy day and lost a very close match, 2-3 – the deciding win for Worlebury coming at the last hole. Winning for Mendip were John Ellis/Terry Carter and Bryan Lewis /Alan Edwards.
Away to Wedmore they lost 2½-3½, with wins for Steve Smith/Colin Davies, Phil Butcher/Martin Osborne and a half from Steve Davis/Mike Snaith. Away to Wells they gained a fine win 3½-2½, this time wins for Simon Brand/Martin Osborne, John Shakesby/John Brooksbank and Brian Say/Colin Davies, with a half from Philip Moores/Peter Rumming.
Entertaining Bath, Mendip recorded a 5-2 win, successful for Mendip were Bryan Lewis/David Garnsworthy, Philip Moores/Kee Low, Colin Davies/David Pilbeam, John Stembridge/Malcolm Hare and Mike Snaith/Charles Roberts. Lastly, they visited Orchardleigh, who are unbeaten on their own turf this year and they maintained that run with a 4-2 win over Mendip. Wins for Mendip came from Bryan Lewis/David Garnsworthy and Steve Cox/Jim Mallon.
