Mendip were represented in the Somerset County Trounson Trophy Team event, held at Bath, by Tom Chapman, Dan Allen, Tom Lowe and Scott Butland, and they did very well to finish fourth, just losing out to Clevedon on countback. Dan was third in the individual event.

The Mid-week Stableford saw a win in Division One for Richard Jeffrey with 38 points, with George Hobbs second on 35 and Liam Robertson third on 34. Division Two went to Stephen Bidwell, with John Crick second with 33 beating. Barry Brimble and Alan O’Leary on countback. Jim Mallon took the spoils in Division Three with 34, with John Toull second with 33 and David Lamb third with 31.

The Ladies held a four-person bowmaker event which saw a win for Chris Olds, Jill Jestico, Eileen Masters and Susy Rudkin with 77 points. In second place were Andrea Williams, Bron Cooper, Cora Pavey and Jan Fukuyama with 72, and in third place with 71 were Nola Russell, Jenny Merrett, Edwina Willis and Jo Espley. The Ladies’ Alliance A Team won a hard-fought victory when entertaining Worlebury, for whom this was their first defeat of the season.

The Somerset County Development Squad Juniors, resplendent in their new green shirts, gained some valuable experience when taking on Mendip’s Ladies. The match ended in an honourable draw.

The Ladies’ weekend stableford saw a fine performance from nine-year-old Ffion Richardson, who scored 41 points which gained her a further handicap reduction to 26. Sarah James was second with 33. The Ladies’ Alliance B Team visited Wells and found the home team in very good form, resulting in a heavy defeat with Jo Espley the only Mendip winner.

The Seniors held their annual drawn for Pairs event and this resulted in a further win this season for Jim Scott, who, partnered by Peter Rumming, scored 42 points. In second place were John Ellis and Alan Evans-Jones with 42, with Alan Newton and John Hargraves third with 41.

The Seniors’ Team visited Weston and came away with a narrow 2½-3½ defeat. Mendip’s wins came from John Stembridge/Alan Evans-Jones and Kevin Carmody/Charles Roberts with Bryan Lewis/John Cross gaining the half. The Team then visited Saltford for their last away fixture and this time halved the match 3½-3½. Winning for Mendip were Jim Scott/Steve Smith, Nick Inskip/Colin Davies, Gareth Collier/Rod Dyson, with Derek Bellew/Martin Lambert gaining a half.

Mendip’s Seniors’ Mixed Open attracted an excellent entry of 88 with 54 visitors from 21 different Clubs. The visitors cannot have been other than very impressed with the presentation of the course which was in top order, their experience being enhanced of course by a beautiful sunny day with just a light breeze.

The first Visitors’ team, with 44, points came from St Pierre with a Team from Alsager second with 42 after countback from an Enmore team. The first Mendip team were Gareth Collier with his partner Carol King from Farrington with 43 points, with Simon Wynn and his partner J. Conway from Bath second with 42 after countback from Margaret Allen and Bob Smallcombe.

Mendip’s Mixed Team entertained Kingsdown on another lovely sunny day and went down to a 2-4 defeat. Wins for Mendip came from Rob and Sue Needham and Clive Copp and Philippa Brown. The visitors were very complimentary about their on-course experience and the post-match meal.

The Pro Shop Nearest the Pin challenge saw another good entry and a win for Oliver Saunder, with Phil Bendall second and Ellen Reakes third.
