Despite very wet and windy playing conditions at Mendip on the Saturday, 144 men entered the Coronation Cup. However, conditions were excellent on the Sunday and this led to some very fine scoring. Division 3 went to Nick Roberts with a Net 65, with Andy Stott second with 66 and Graham Colbourne coming third with 67.
Clive Copp was the Winner of Division 2 with 68 after count back from Ashley Swain with Myles Carpenter third with 69. Division 1 went to Chris Butland with 65 with Jordan Vaughan second with 68 on count back from Dean Lewer. However an outstanding round of 61 from from James Church who recently re-joined Mendip from local club Wells saw him the clear winner of the Trophy. Well done James who now sees his handicap reduce to 9.6. The Mens Order of Merit now shows Peter Grafton leading with 197 points with Dean Lewer second with 164 and Jack Hayes third with 160.
The Pro Shop Nearest the Pins competitions went to Ellen Reakes with Captain James Boyce coming second and to Thomas Richardson with Henry Banks second.
The Ladies Stand Aside Texas Scramble saw forty four Ladies take part. In third place were Carol Curtis, Chris Down, Carol Howerd and Sue Needham with 64.4. In second place came Margaret Allen, Lulu Carolan, Cora Pavey and Ellen Reakes with 62.8 but clear winners were Lady Captain Anne Collins, Nichola Croft, Jean Padfield and Sandie Roper with a fine net 69.
The Juniors continue to hold regular 9 hole competitions. On 13th August young Daisy Jeffrey made up for her disappointment in the Ladies Club Championship by winning with 22 points after a triple tie. After count back Ashton Silk was second and Alec Roberts coming in third. Then on the 20th August, Dilan Perkins came second with 17 points after count back from Ashton Silk, but clear winner was Polly Jones with an outstanding 24 points and who sees her handicap drop from 46 to 39. Well done Polly.
94 Seniors competed for the Bill Freeman Trophy in very testing conditions with a gale force cross wind making scoring difficult for most. However some competitors coped better than others and the top 6 all beat or bettered CSS. In fifth place came Andrew Ashman with 36, Malcolm Srawley was second with 37, Gary Lenihan was third with 38 and Andy Frampton was second on count back. However the Trophy Winner was Mike Merrick, playing off 11 who carded an impressive 41 points, his round including 2 birdies and an eagle. Defying the years Brian Francis demonstrated that he still has what it takes to win the Veterans Prize with 37 points.
