One hundred and thirty two Mendip men competed for the Showering Cup.

Despite very reasonable weather, the course played with a degree of difficulty that kept scoring high with only a dozen scores under the Par of seventy. Division three went to Paul Drew with a net sixty nine, with Andrew Robinson second with seventy beating Philip Vowles on count back.

Division two saw Peter Grafton maintain his excellent form with a sixty seven with Stephen Rushton coming second with sixty eight on count back from third placed, Nigel Brokenshire.

Division one was won by Stephan Golledge with sixty seven, Matt Bendall was second with sixty nine after count back from Liam Robertson. However, the overall Winner was twenty eight handicapper, Jamie Rushton with the competitions’ best score of sixty six.

The competition was the latest counting event towards the Mens’ Order of Merit which now sees Peter Grafton as clear leader with 245 points, Dean Lewer second with 164 and Jack Hayes third with 160. Peter has done remarkably well having started the season on twenty one handicap, this latest victory reduces his handicap to nine.

The seniors continued their match programme with a double header with Bristol and Clifton. At home they went down 2-3 with wins recorded by seniors captain, John Brooksbank playing with Bryan Lewis and David Pilbeam/Robert Miller. However, away to B & C, the result was reversed this time with wins for Bryan Lewis/Colin Davies and Robert Miller/Derek Bellew with Martin Osborne/Nick Inskip and Alan Edwards/Michael O’Haire gaining halves.?Mendip, despite all the Covid restrictions that have had to be put in place, were delighted to be able to run their seniors open event, the Seniors Mendip Vase. The event attracted 124 entrants, over eighty of whom were visitors from a wide ranging galaxy of Clubs. Despite heavy rain showers, a strong northerly wind and one suspension of play due to lightening strikes, the event was completed successfully. The full list of prize winners is as follows

The Mendip past captains held their annual get together, albeit in rather different circumstances. Due to the al fresco dining arrangements with some eating inside and some outside, gone was the formal Dinner and Captains Jackets. Replaced this year by casual and warm clothing for those eating outside.

A sandwich lunch was prepared by a member’s wife with after golf fare provided by a local fish and chip shop. However, the past captains still enjoyed their stilton and port to finish off the event.

There are not too many clubs that have such an active Past Captains Society with twenty four playing this year. All agreed, that whilst different the day was equally enjoyable and a good time was had by all.
