Mendip’s Men’s Captain, Chad Patel enjoyed excellent support for his Charity Day event with one hundred players taking part. With off course challenges, a raffle and silent auction the day raised £2,200 for Young Lives versus Cancer.

Fundraising was helped by a sponsored run around the full course totalling 4.65 miles, by Chad’s daughter Lahna. The golfing event was a four man bowmaker and the winning team with ninety two points were David Jukes, Nigel Coleman, Paul Lewis and Tim Flagg. second also on ninety two were Tom Howe, Joe Reilly, William Dyer and Clayton Merrett and 3rd  after a triple count back were Nola Russell, Gina Howard, Chris Williams and Rebecca Edwards with ninety points.

The Avalon A Team visited Stockwood Vale and although all matches went to the 17th or 18th holes, the visit resulted in a 1-4 defeat with only a win for Team Captain Dan Allen and Spencer Pocock. However the C Team had a close 3-2 win over Oake with wins for Dean Lewer/Chris Butland and Gary Quin/Clive Copp and with halves from Scott Butland/Malcolm Srawley and Paul Reakes/Tony Logan.

Despite clashing with an Alliance fixture, thirty six ladies played in the 4bbb stableford, a Ping qualifying event. There was some excellent scoring with eight pairs recording forty points or better. Winning after count back with forty three points were Gina Howard and Allison Rumming with Dee Garnsworth and Karen Cookson in second place. Third went to Anne Collins and Louise Scott.

The Ladies ICL team visited Oake and just missed out on a win, going down 3-4 Wins came from Team Captain Ali Kay, Louise Scott and Anita Butcher.

The Seniors held a very successful Open three man Team event which attracted ninety players. With the wet weather making scoring difficult an outstanding eighty four points saw the first Mendip members prize go to Ian Hall, David Jukes and Tony Scott with eighty four points. Second members prize was won by Andy Griffiths and Axel Palmer who were joined by ex member Brett Halling Brown, now playing at Burnham, with eighty two. The first visitors prize went to a team from Taunton & Pickeridge also with eighty four. The second visitors prize was won by a Yeovil Team with seventy seven and the third visitors prize went to a Vivary Park Team with seventy five.

The Seniors visited Burnham & Berrow and gained a very creditable halved match with wins for Steve Davis/Simon Atkinson and John Ellis/Nick Inskip and with halves from Robert Miller/Colin Davies and Tony Scott/Norman Squire.

The Seniors Bill Freeman Trophy was played in brutal conditions with heavy rain and strong winds reducing the initial one hundred strong field to a very brave forty entrants. Ken Webster won Div 1 and the Trophy with thirty seven points an outstanding score in the conditions. Simon Wynn was second with thirty four and David Braithwaite was third with thirty three. Division Two went to Paul Wood with thirty four with Henry Banks second with thirty three and Stephen Hall was third with twenty nine and Division Three was won by Colin Davies with thirty three, Stephen Smith was second with thirty two and John Treeby was third with thirty. And you have to feel very sorry for one group who battled to the end, finishing soaking wet and with sodden scorecards who then forgot to sign them, two of which would have been in the prizes!

Our very young Juniors continue to play in the Somerset Juniors Mini Tour 9 hole events. The latest one was held at Mendip Spring. Competing were nine year old Tilde Rocker-Cook, ten year old Lauren Morris who won second prize in her age group and eight year old Joshua Morris. What excellent experience for them. Tony Williams
