At Mendip Golf Club on Saturday 26th November, despite a wild and windy day, an extraordinary feat was achieved by twelve-year-old Alec Roberts who hit a perfect tee shot on the par-three eighth hole.
Holding the ideal line for the 165 yards, the ball took a couple of bounces to go in for his first hole-in-one! However, not content with one… he repeated the feat on the 150 yard par three twelfth hole. With the ball nowhere to be seen on the green, Alec found it in the bottom of the hole! Chances of two holes-in-one in a round are sixty-seven million to one!
Twelve year old Alec (handicap seventeen) and his brother Ben, aged fourteen (handicap eighteen), have been coached by Mendip’s Director of Golf and his team since 2017.
Their father Nick was already a member and now mum Helen has taken up the game - a real family affair!
The last of the Turkey Trot events was the Singles in which there were 99 entrants. Best score of the day came from Philip Leadbeater with forty-one points. There was then a triple count back on forty, which resulted in second place going to Nick Cox followed by Lee Sparkes and Colin Wiltshire. Further prize winners were Chris Huzal, thirty-nine, and Ryan Sainsbury, thirty-eight beating Clayton Merrett on countback.
The Mendip Ladies held a nine hole qualifying event which was badly effected as the heavy rain came in as the morning progressed. The event saw a win in Division One for Anita Butcher with sixteen points, Edwina Willis was second with fifteen after countback from Jinhee Page. Division Two was won by Elaine Kitchenham with seventeen, well clear of Diane Stanton in second place with thirteen.
The Pro Shop Nearest the Pin event went to Cliff Hall this week, with Tony Scott second and Spencer Pocock third.
