The Ladies’ nine hole Bowmaker event saw 42 take to the fairways of Mendip Golf Club, a splendid turnout for this time of year.
An excellent score of forty points saw a win for Nichola Croft, Elaine Richardson and Susy Rudkin (who has made fine progress this year, and I am sure will see a further handicap reduction, soon!), with Marian Speed, Allison Rumming and Jo Espley second with 37. Sue Needham, Carol Curtis and Ann Padley were third, with 36.
Twenty–five ladies from the Interclub and Friendly Teams held their annual get-together for a nine-hole mix-up, followed by a very social lunch. Luckily, the weather was sunny, with little wind, and the course played well, despite the recent torrents of rain. The winners were Margaret Hawker and Susy Rudkin, playing as a two-ball, who had such a good score that their ‘ghost’ player was not needed.
Runners-Up were Margaret Allen, Kay O’Connor and Gina Howard. Team Captains, Andrea Williams and Allison Rumming, thanked all the ladies for their support throughout the season.
The Seniors held their Turkey Trot Singles event and even though it was only a day before December, 87 took part. Scoring was challenging, with the tees set well back and the continuing rain, but at least it stayed dry for the event itself.
However, the conditions did not appear to bother Martin Myers, who scored an excellent forty points to gain victory, with Malcolm Srawley coming second with 39. John Ellis was then third with 38, and Simon Wynn was fourth, with 37.5. There was a six-way back count on thirty-five points, which left Alan Roper fifth.
The first of the Winter Mixed Social events took place on a very cold but dry day. Pairings were split up from their normal partnerships, which added to the enjoyment of the event.
Some new partnerships gelled from the off and Club Chairman, Rob Needham, now playing with Pauline Williams, scored a fine 44 points, which gave them a clear victory. In second place came Sandie Roper, playing with Clive Copp and they scored forty points, just beating Pippa Brown and David Collins on countback. Back in the warm, all the competitors enjoyed a fine carvery served up by the Clubhouse Team.
A packed Clubhouse attended the annual Prize Giving event overseen by Stuart Disney, the Club Professional. Stuart commented on how pleasing it was to see such support for the event from members and how nice it was to see six Junior Members picking up awards in the various Adult Competitions.
A special mention was made of Aimee Sawyer’s achievements in what has been a very busy and successful year for her.
Aimee has reduced her handicap from three to +1, has broken the Mendip Course Record and has played in Competitions all over the country.
Two Pro Shop Nearest the Pin competitions saw wins for Dee Garnsworthy, with Andy Matthews second and John Ellis, third. Richard Jeffery with his partner, Adrian Payne, came second and Tom Lowe, third.
