Mendip’s Mens Captain’s Day saw some fine weather and the entrants had an interesting format in their singles stableford where they could nominate three holes before they started their round where they would gain double points.
Winning with obviously a good choice of selected holes, was Hugh Glandfield with fifty one points well clear of a group of players on forty six.
After countback Jack Hayes was second, Nicholas White third and Dan Allen fourth.
The Avalon B Team gained a fine 3-2 win away to Taunton and Pickeridge. There were debuts for Andy Walton, Simon Wynn and new member, fourteen-year-old Toby Morris. Wins came from Cliff Hall/Rich Clifford, Simon Wynn/Liam Robertson and another fine performance from Alex Gay partnering young Toby who were actually three down with four to play but came through to record the vital win.
The Avalon C Team beat Stockwood Vale 4-1 even though they had to give multiple shots in most of the matches. Wins for Malcolm Srawley/Scott Butland, debutant Dave Goldie/Chris Butland, Mike Rokitowski/Tony Logan and Gary Quin/John Ellis.
The annual running of the Berkeley Hall Foursomes Medal event saw thirty couples compete and resulted in excellent scoring in perfect conditions and a very close finish. After countback the winners were Martin Wilkins/Nigel Brokenshire with a net sixty five, Rob Cook/Mark Necker were second. In third place were Colin and Nigel Wiltshire with sixty six again after countback from Jack Hayes/Spencer Pocock.
Thirty ladies played in the Centenary Plate Medal. Winning with a fine score of net 72 was Lynn Cox just beating Libby Bellew by a point. Third after countback was Lilian Peel with seventy six, with Jinhee Page fourth.
The Ladies Alliance B Team visited Clevedon but were defeated 4-10, with wins coming from Jenny Merrett and Fran Davies. The A Team however had a storming win over Wells 12-2 with wins from Ellen Reakes, Aimee Sawyer, Marian Speed, Lynne Vowles, Jenny Merrett and Elaine P Richardson.
Nearest the Pin this week went to Andy Griffiths.
The Seniors Avalon Team visited Wells and came away with a 3½-1½ win, points coming from Gary Quin/John Ellis, Simon Brand/David Braithwaite and Bryan Lewis/John Stembridge with Steve Davis/Andy Humphries gaining a half.
A further success came when visiting Cannington with a 4-1 win, success for Gary Quin/Kevin Carmody, Chris Bryant/Rob Richardson, Simon Brand/Andy Humphries and David Golledge/Paul Wood.
However, visiting Cricket St Thomas the Team suffered a 1-4 defeat the sole win coming from Terry Carter/Rob Richardson. Despite this, the Team remains top of their division with three home fixtures to come
The Seniors Friendly Team had a close victory when visiting Worlebury 3½-2½. Wins from Kevin Carmody/Andy Humphries, Tony Scott/Paul Wood and Ian Whittamore/John Scott with the half coming from Ken Langridge/Paul Godwin.
A very friendly half was gained by the Team when visiting Bath with wins for Nigel Brokenshire/Rob Richardson and Tony George/John Brooksbank, with halves coming from Robert Miller/Alan Edwards and Colin Davies/David Pilbeam.
The Mixed Team captained by Elaine Richardson gained a very friendly halved match with Tidworth.
Wins came from Louise Scott/David Jukes, Chris Williams/Steve Rawlings and Lynn and David Cox.
