The Seniors section of Fosseway Golf Club experienced mixed fortunes in their recent series of social matches. They followed an encouraging 3–3 halved match away to Wincanton, with a 4.5–1.5 defeat at home to Woodspring.
Historically, Fosseway have struggled on the Wincanton course with its collection of devious bunkers. Pat Cray and Cyril Blacker led the way with a convincing 5&4 win and John Bendle and Mike Ricketts finished one up. Captain John Appleton with Graham Edgell and Allen Cheney partnered by Malcolm Tucker were both one down coming to the last green, but threes for both teams were enough to earn vital halves. George Underwood and Brian Phelps finished two down and Frank Reeves and Gerry Rowell were beaten 5&4.
Captain Appleton called on the services of 91-year-old Geoff Weeks for the Woodspring fixture and he didn’t disappoint, gaining an excellent half alongside Vice-Captain Underwood. Arthur Bellinger and Tucker achieved the best home result of the day with a 6&4 win. Appleton and Edgell ended two down, Blacker and John Williams lost 2&1, Cray and Denis White were beaten 4&2, while Bendle and Rowell finished on the wrong end of a 5&4 result.
