FORTY-SEVEN pairs played in the Captains Trophy at Mendip Golf Club which saw a win for Wayne Dryburgh/Omar Aziz with a fine net 58. In 2nd place came Richard Clifford/Cliff Hall with 60 and Lee Callow/Danny Durbin came 3rd with 61 after count back from Martin Stephens/Mark Necker.
The Ladies Alliance A team went down 6-8 when visiting a very dry Worlebury. Wins came from Aimee Sawyer, Libby Dezis and Ellen Reakes.
The Ladies ICL team had a fine 4-3 win away to Oake with wins from Carol King, Pauline Young, Lally Gibson and Ali Kay. Lizzie Wood made her debut and thanks to Susan Forshaw who stood in at the last minute despite it being her birthday.
A very successful Ladies Open Bowmaker was held with a full start sheet. The winning visitors team with 83 points came from Sidmouth, with a team from Burnham 2nd with 79 and a team from B & C were 3rd with 78. The 1st member’s team prize went to Gail Proctor supported by guests from Mendip Spring with 78.
The Mixed team visited Enmore and just lost a very close match 3½-4½. Wins came from David and Lillian Peel and Peter and Allison Rumming and halves were gained by John Ward/Rosemary Brown, Clive Copp/Pippa Brown and David and Susan Forshaw.
Incredibly the Seniors had 5 fixtures during this past week. Unfortunately the Scratch KO team playing in the Somerset County event narrowly lost 2-3 away to Clevedon, wins coming from Martin Stephens and Steve Davis. However the Avalon team maintained their unbeaten record with an excellent 3-2 win away to Enmore, wins from Simon Brand/Paul Godwin, Gary Quin/Andy Humphries and Simon Wynn/Chris Betenson.
The Seniors Friendly team enjoyed a fine 5-1 home win over Weston with wins from Kevin Carmody/Alan Edwards, Paul Godwin/John Cross, Paul Wood/Tony Taylor, Norman Squire/John Brooksbank and Keith Beasley/Phil Blissett. They were not so fortunate when visiting Knowle, losing 2-5; wins from Paul Wood/Bryan Lewis and from Selwyn Rees/Shaun Rich. However it was back to form when beating Cumberwell 4½-1½, wins coming from Paul Wood (completing a hat trick for the week)/ Ian Vincent, Robert Miller/Derek Bellew, Ken Langridge/Andy Frampton, Rob Richardson/John Parham (who kindly stepped in at the last minute) and with a half gained by Colin Wiltshire/Nick Inskip.
Mendip were delighted to host the West of England Under 14s Championship. The 40 youngsters found the course in excellent order but with a very testing wind. Entrants came from far afield with players from East Herts, Moor Park and Ferndown among the entrants. However they coped well and the overall Winner from Sidmouth, a 5 handicapper, carded a 10 over gross 152 for the 2 rounds, in excellent golf conditions. Young Mendip junior Maise Dezis, playing off 12, came 3rd in the net event.
Meanwhile, Seniors Captain Paul Wood held a very successful Charity Day supported by 104 Seniors playing a 4 person Texas Scramble. Scoring was very low and the winners were Robert Berry/Phillip Bissett/Farquhar Ogilvie/Julian Pallister with 52.
But the real wnners on the day were Paul’s chosen Charity, Parkinsons UK, as through the entries, the raffle and other money making schemes on the day, £2,600 was raised,
