Despite now well into November, competitive golf at Mendip Golf Club continues with good entries in the various events.

The Men’s Turkey Trot 4BBB event saw 98 competing. As usual, competition was fierce, with only four points covering the top 15. After a triple countback on 43, Hugh Glanfield and Chris Roe finished fourth, Tom Chapman and Philip Leadbeater third and Dan Allen and Myles Carpenter second, leaving Peter Kivi and Chairman of Competitions Ryan Sainsbury as the winners with 44 points.

Nearest the Pin was won this week by Rob Cook with Ellen Reakes second and Scott Butland third.

Forty-four Ladies played in the nine hole Bowmaker. Whilst scoring overall was on the low side, the top two teams came in with good scores in the fairly tough conditions, with the course playing long. Dee Garnsworthy/Chris Williams/Kay O’Connor/Chris Olds were third with 36. In second place came Jenny Merrett/Edwina Willis/Jo Espley/Lyn Vowles with 39 leaving the winners on 42 being Chris Atkinson/Sue Needham/Jinhee Page/Susy Rudkin.

Mendip are delighted to announce that Former County and Mendip Ladies’ Captain Fran Davies has now become President of the Somerset Ladies Golf Association and will hold this position for a two year term. Congratulations, Fran.

A full start sheet of one hundred played in the Seniors’ Turkey Trot event. Held as a Shot Gun start, there were twenty prizes on offer and following the golf, the Clubhouse was full with Steve and his team looking after the catering and drinking needs of the competitors whilst the results were worked out. Some of the 32 pointers gained prizes and in fact, only two players bettered par. There were five players on 36 points and after countbacks, Selwyn Rees was sixth, Richard Baillon was fifth, Martin Wilkins was fourth and Alan Kay was third. 37 points gave David Jukes second place leaving the overall winner with 38 points as Jim Boyd.

To complete the list of cup winners for 2021, we have the Hospital Cup Plate played for by the first round losers in the main Hospital Cup event and this year this was won by Michael Rokitowski, who beat Stephen Ledger in the final. The Jim Thame Foursomes was won by Paul Smith and Andy Parfitt and they last won the event probably some thirty years ago! They beat Malcolm and Wayne Srawley in the final. The Jeff Jones Mixed Greensomes was won by Clive Copp and Philippa Brown, who beat Alan and Sandie Roper in the final. And finally, the Rickards Cup, the scratch singles KO Cup, was won by Tom Small, a member of the Greens Team, now playing off +2, who adds this trophy to his success in winning the Club Championship this year. Very well done Tom. Tony Williams
