Being British, we rarely believe a weather forecast, but unfortunately, a number of Senior golfers did and withdrew from the competition 24 hours too early! They consequently missed out on almost perfect conditions, albeit for a couple of soggy fairways. The penultimate Monthly Medal of the year was keenly contested with Dave ‘Chippy’ Jones heading the field with an impressive net 68. Next week’s competition will be played in sub-zero conditions – or maybe it won’t!

Onto the final bit of league news and a huge well done to Ben, Louis, Alex B, Izzy and Joel, who, between them all, contributed to us retaining the league knock-out title. The trio of Ben, Louis and Alex B completed the job, beating Taunton and Pickeridge 2–1 at Burnham and Berrow last Sunday. Congratulations, excellent job!

In the Ladies, Eight Coppers competed for the Coppers Salver, a Stableford Competition on Tuesday, 15th September. The scores reflected how difficult conditions were, with many of the greens being flooded in places following the heavy rain. The prizewinners were as follows – first place and winner of the Coppers Salver: Tracey Watts, with 27 points on countback. In second place was Paddy Hunt, also with 27 points and third was Nadine Spong, with 24 points.

The Oake Manor Open (near Taunton) was also held on Tuesday, 15th September. Farrington Park’s only team representative of Maureen Charlton, Pauline Young and Min Woodward (outgoing Lady Captain), competed against 28 other teams from around the West Country in a two scores to count bowmaker. Although the day was a glorious early autumn one, the course played long due to some recent rainfall. Maureen, Pauline and Min missed out of the main prize by just one point, by coming in second with 73 points.

The Sycamore Trophy was held on 17th September. Once again, the scoring reflected the difficult conditions with Jill Eade, Jean Sage and Laura Fox winning on countback with 64 points from second placed Min Woodward, Rosi Brown and Jackie Hobbs, also with 64 points.

The Men’s Saturday Medal was played in good conditions for the Romaine Trophy, with the winner of the trophy with the best gross score on the day. That went to Chris Shanks, with a excellent gross 79. At the top in Division One of the Medal, Steve Hobbs had a great day with a score of 81–71 with Mike Goodliff a close second with a score of 82–72 and Pete Wenmouth in third with 83–73. In Division Two, Peter Court had a successful day with a 102–74 followed in second by Peter Hansford with a 92–75 and Jamie Webb in third with 96–76.
