Despite winter being firmly upon us, all three Sections at Mendip held competitions this week.

Eighty-four men played in the first of the season’s Turkey Trot events, a Bowmaker. Matt Lambert/Alan O’Leary/Stephen Rushton came third with 78 points. In second place after countback were Mark George /Brian Rawlings/Stephen Coate with 79 leaving Guillaume Lesage/James Church/Craig Sharp as the competition winners.

Also announced this week were the winners of the season-long Order Of Merit Competition. In total 294 players recorded at least one score. The Competition rewards consistency over a season of events and this year’s result could not have been much closer. However, in third place was Simon Jefferies with 469 points with Matt Rawlings second with 470 leaving the winner as Rob Edney with 472 points. Well done to the winners.

The Ladies have moved into winter mode with their weekly competitions now played over nine holes. The first of these was a Waltzing Matilda Stableford which thirty-six ladies played in. In third place were Jenny Merrett/Edwina Willis/Diane Stanton/Suzy Rudkin with 41 points. In second place were Dee Garnsworthy /Elaine Richardson/ Elaine P. Richardson/Carol Howard also with 41 but taking second place on countback. The winners, with 43 points, were Lady Captain, Anne Collins/Caroline Simper /Pauline Williams/Ann Padley.

The Seniors held their own Waltzing Bowmaker event to raise funds for The Royal British Legion and a great total of £321 was raised. 108 players took part on a bright, albeit chilly November day. In third place were Gareth Collier/David Braithwaite /Steve Turner/John Ellis with 80 points. In second place with 82 points were Seniors’ Captain, Alan Edwards/Peter Rumming /Kelvin Lum/ Derek Strudwick. However, streets ahead with a fantastic 91 points were Alan Williams/Derek Padley/Men’s Captain Elect, Alan Roper/Martin Osborne.

The Pro Shop Nearest the Pin was won by Richard Bull, with Chris Lindley second and a tie for third between Malcolm Dawkins and Ellen Reakes.

There can be few Clubs who play for as many Trophies over a season as Mendip. And in addition to the Men’s events there are Cups played for by the Mixed pairings and several Ladies and Seniors Trophies. The results of this year’s winners have now been announced and I’ll publish details, a small number at a time, over the next few weeks.

The Anderson Goblet is a scratch competition open to entrants with a handicap higher than 11.1. This years winner was Paul Jamieson who beat Mervyn Vaughan in the Final. The Duffers Cup is similarly a scratch competition open to entrants with a handicap of 15.7 or higher. This year’s winner was James Blackstock who beat Martin Sutherland in the final.
