Wells Seniors have drawn three of their four matches so far this month. While everyone feels reasonably happy with a drawn friendly match, it is more satisfying when it is an away fixture, as occurred at Taunton and Pickeridge.

Our first three pairs won, Steve Bocquet and Rob Berry leading the way (5&3), followed by Piers Dalby and Len Sweales (4&3) and Steve Dent and John Moxon (1-up, thanks to a long downhill putt from Steve on their sloping final green). At that stage, we had hopes of a possible away win, but the remaining pairs weren’t able to maintain the momentum, though Glyn Hallett and Phil Giorgetti came close, losing on the last.

We played Bath for the first time in our long history (Bath founded in 1880 and Wells in 1893), and thoroughly enjoyed their interesting and challenging course at Sham Castle. Predictably, since only three of the Wells team had ever played there before, we came second on this initial encounter, despite a promising start from Glyn Hallett and Graham Bingham, who won 3&2. Of the remaining five pairs, Mike Gee and Pete Bartholomew came closest to a respectable result, losing 2&1, but we all enjoyed the day.

The home matches were both 3-3 draws, against Weston-super-Mare and Long Sutton. In the former, there were good wins from Andy Williams and John Moxon (4&3), Len Sweales and John Watson (4&2) and Graham Bingham and Dave Couzens (3&2), with Dave Hayward and Allan Thompson narrowly losing on the 18th.

It was a similar story against Long Sutton, with wins for Phil Spring and Ian Mills (6&4), Mike Gee and Andrew Boatswain (5&3) and Bill O’Callaghan and Dave Couzens (3&2). Phil Spring and Terry Searle were both making a welcome first appearance for the Seniors this year. Peter Leverick and John Moxon enjoyed playing against ex-Wells Captain, Mike Stringer, but (not for the first time this season) Captain John squandered his chances and they lost 3&2. Janice White
