The Stragglers hosted Minehead in the penultimate match of the season. Minehead brought most of their first team, but our secret weapon was trees! Apparently they had a tree once but someone cut it down.

First out were Terry Searle and John Baker, playing one of the low handicappers, we feared the worst, especially as he sank a thirty-foot putt on the first for a birdie. Not to be outdone, Searle achieved a par and halved the hole. All square after seventeen, Searle came up trumps on the eighteenth hole and they won one up.

Steve Heath and Simon Harris played an eight and nine handicap pair who gelled together. Despite a spirited effort they succumbed six and five.

Bill Levell and Richard Williams fought hard, but the away team won five and three.

The strong pairing of Stuart Gowen and Ben Jones, playing exceptional golf, thrashed their opponents six and five.

Jon Mackness and Paul Cullen played well but their opponents proved too strong. Overall Wells lost 3-2 but despite this, everyone enjoyed the day and we look forward to next year.

Wells Seniors played two matches in windy conditions with passing showers. Against Mendip Spring away we lost by two games to four, and some of us lost quite a few balls in water as well! The two Wells pairs, who both fought valiantly to achieve a win on the last hole, were Peter Leverick and Glyn Hallett, and Mike Gee and Allan Thompson.

At home to Bath in similar conditions, every match was keenly contested and went to at least the sixteenth hole. Nick Wilson was in great form with three birdies on the seventh, ninth and twelth, and his partner John Moxon was for once able to capitalise on his shots to give them a 3&2 win against strong opposition. Dave Hayward and Jock McKinven also achieved a 3&2 victory, while Steve Dent and Allan Thompson won 2&1. A half from Mike Gee and Ron Hancock sealed an overall home win for Wells by three and a half to two and a half, with Peter Leverick and Ian Mills, and Bill O’Callaghan and Piers Dalby losing close matches.
