The Avalon League team played against Long Sutton and started the day rock bottom of the league, with only one win at home, but the rest of the games away were lost, with some heavy defeats. So, it was important to get back to winning ways, especially with the introduction of two up, two down.
With a few regulars missing, there was only one pairing that had played together this season, maybe this is the way forward, with the team coming in with an amazing 5-0 victory!
Glen Crocker and Baden Wilkinson had a comfortable round, winning 6&4.
Nick Wilson and Bill McCollum, even though second out, were the last out on the course, going up the last all square. On the 18th, Bill put his downhill putt 4 to 6 feet past, but luckily we can rely on our current seniors’ club champion to get the putt back and secure the win, 1 up.
Pascal Norman and Tom Roberts were the only other pairing to venture down the 16th, but came in with a 2&1 win.
Ian Burr and Pete Walker had some lengthy putts from Ian and a chip in from Pete, and took their time, winning 4&3.
Mike Metcalfe and Jason Huck started off badly, losing the first two holes, but stuck in there, with both not playing at their best, managed to gel and come back, winning 4&3.
Off went the ‘Somerset Soldiers’ (our Stragglers) into Dorset, to play the return match against Sherborne. We had won our home match 4-3, therefore it was all to play for.
Seven platoons of two took on the opposition, with the following results: Steve Barrow and Stuart Gowen won 2/1; the eldest and youngest (George Barrow and Terry Searle) won, 1 up; Terry Pearce and Gary Leigh, who explored nearly every bunker on the course, lost 4/3; Sam Hayter and Adam Holiday lost 2/1, Steve Clark (Thank You) and Guy Timson lost 4/3, Richard Mansfield and John Baker (The Stalwarts) won 2/1 and finally, Richard Williams and Paul Cullen lost 5/4.
Therefore, Sherborne won 4/3, which equalled our score at home, so the match was a draw and Sherborne retained the trophy.
The Ladies’ medal results for July were: Division One, first, Catherine Levell, nett 77, second, Polly Williams.
Division Two, first, Katrina Foote, nett 71, second, Chris Gee and third, Gill Magrath.
