This year, the Captain’s Away Day was revived and was held at the Bowood House Golf Resort in Wiltshire.
Forty golfers enjoyed a beautifully turned-out course, where the wide fairways peppered with many bunkers made an interesting challenge altogether different from that we enjoy at Wells.
The winners were Dave Hayward and Tony Baker with a very creditable score of 42 points. Second pair on countback were Glen Crocker and Barry Keys, whilst Mike Metcalfe and Geoff Spinks came third. The first mixed pair were Gill Magrath and Phil Spring.
Meanwhile, the Stragglers have been busy! They travelled to Worlebury, where the weather was excellent with hardly a breath of wind; the sun shining bright and warm. The course looked in excellent condition and the views over Sand Bay to Wales beyond were breathtaking.
First were Paul and Adam, and despite halving one of the holes with birdies, they lost one-down. Second were Pascal and Richard, who lost narrowly 6&4. Third were Steve and John, who had good, tight game that came down to the last hole, where Steve found the green with two excellent shots. Needing two putts to secure the win, he left his first putt an agonising eighteen inches to the left, and an honourable half was declared.
Fourth were the reliable Terry and Stuart, who were three-down after three, and although they steadied the ship, they found themselves five down after twelve. They fought back gallantly, but unfortunately ran out of holes and lost 2&1. Last were George and Ben, who didn’t quite win. So, it was a win on the day for Worlebury, 4.5-0.5, which meant that overall, it was Worlebury 5.5-Wells 4.5.
The Seniors’ September medal took place recently. The players enjoyed the early autumn weather with varying results.
Division One was won by Colin Webber with a nett-71, closely followed by Steve Clark’s 72 and Graham Bingham’s 73. Division Two saw Club Captain, Andrew Boatswain, shoot nett-74 and Richard Hole 73. The only person to do really well was Dean Hamilton, who had a magnificent nett-66.
The Abbey Trophy was played shortly after the last Senior medal. This is a medal competition for the best-placed players of the season’s Seniors’ medals. The weather was atrocious, so qualifying was a slightly poisoned chalice. It rained heavily and the wind blew. Unsurprisingly, the scores were not exceptional, given the conditions.
Mike Metcalfe came third with a nett-73 and Graham Bingham second with 72. The 2019 Abbey Trophy winner was the consistently successful Phil Spring, who shot nett-70. He is having a very good year!
In the Scratch Cup, Pascal Norman narrowly won against Jack Baillie. Although Jack was leading after eighteen holes, a ding-dong second round with a string of birdies saw Pascal triumph by 2&1. In the Dyer Cup, Roger Sarsby got the better of Dean Hamilton by a margin of 7&6.
Wells Seniors hosted Weston-super-Mare for their return match. George White carried stand-in Captain, Andy Williams, to a big win amidst moans from the
opposition about his long putts and chip-ins.
There were also wins for Steve Bocquet and Len Sweales (8&6), Dave Hayward and John Moxon, Nick Wilson and Ron Hancock. Mike Magrath and Rob Baker halved their game. The sole loss came from Peter Leverick and Dave Couzens. Thus, Wells ran out the winners, 4½-1½.
Thank you to everyone for coming to the Pro-Am Competition on Sunday. We had 22 teams taking part and everyone appeared to be having a good time. First place was Geoff and Roona Spinks; joint second was David and Laraine Sheppard and Derek Biggs and partner were third.
