The first joint Ladies’ and Senior Men’s Invitation Day had forty teams taking part in scorching weather.
In first place for the ladies were Erica Klim (Wells) and Hazel Beven (Burnham and Berrow) with 40 pts. In second place, were Chris Gee (Wells) and Janis Lawrence (Wedmore) with 38 pts on count back.
The top four places for the men were on count back: first place Mike Gee (Wells) and Mike Stew (Wedmore) and second Place Nick Carter (Wells) and Tom Cashmore (Kingsdown).
The Wells Stragglers played away at Tall Pines and won 3 and 2.
Steve Porter and Gary Leigh won 4/3; Terry Searle and Bill Levell Lost 2/1; Terry Pearce (who only lost three balls this week) and Richard Mansfield won by 2; John Baker and Bernhard Young lost 2/1 and finally John Hockey and Philip Kenworthy won 4/3. A very good course with super-fast greens and certainly a very welcoming opposition team.
Wells’ Senior Men gained a comprehensive 6–1 home win over Enmore Park, an especially pleasing result as they also won the corresponding away fixture earlier in the season. Club President John Chillington, David Couzens, George White, Len Sweales, Andrew Boatswain and Bill O’Callaghan were all part of the winning pairings.
On Pro’s Day 144 players tackled the course on one of the hottest days of the year. The scoring was fantastic as to be expected with a full handicap Four Ball Better Ball format.
The winning team of Steve Whatley and David Couzens returned a scorecard of 46 points only just coming out on top by a single point from four groups who returned 45 points. Couzens hit a strong run of form over the closing six holes to seal the title for them.
Second place went to a mixture of youth and experience, with Dave Hayward and Tom Roberts, Juniors’ Captain, claiming second place on the count back over the back nine. Third place went to Wells Golf Club committee members Phil Slater and Bob Lench.
The men’s Tweedale Medal winners were Division One, C. Betenson nett 67; Division Two, I. McKeown nett 62 and Division Three, K. Scadden nett 64.
