The Wells Past Captains held their Invitation day on Saturday and were blessed with a lovely warm afternoon. Amongst the banter and pleasantries there was a smattering of good golf, particularly from the winners, Phillip Slater and his brother, Richard, with 47 points!

Second were George Davis and his partner David Andow (Weston-Super-Mare). In third place were Andy Williams and his partner Mike Stringer, now of Long Sutton.

The Stragglers played Dawlish Warren, in fine conditions, and the greens were as usual their very high standard.

First out was Grant Rogers and Jon Mackness who won 3-2, next was Richard Mansfield and returning Straggler, Simon Elliot, who slaughtered their opposition 6-4. Next the two Terrys (Pearce and Searle), who purposely lost 5-4 to ensure that it wasn’t going to be a whitewash for Wells. Richard Sheard and Rory Meek won one-up on the 18th, followed by Philip Kenworthy and ‘newbie’ Scott Barrett who halved their match. Finally, Steve ‘hit the ball out of sight’ Porter and Paul Cullen won 3-2. Therefore, the result of the match was a 4.5-1.5 win for Wells.

Wells Seniors’ busy end of season week commenced with their Annual Away Day, when 52 players competed over the interesting and popular course at Chipping Sodbury. An enjoyable day was had by all and the surprise winners of the Away Day Shield were Pete Bartholomew and his partner, Seniors’ Captain Glyn Hallett. This drawn pairing just edging out Nick Wilson and Tony Harrison on countback.

The final seniors’ friendly match took place at Shirehampton and despite wins for Chris Strickland and John Watson, Glyn Hallett and Ken Ford and a good half from Richard Sheard and Bill Carruthers, the team suffered a 4.5 to 2.5 defeat. Nevertheless, a good wins to losses ratio was achieved over a reasonably successful season, with a number of new players taking part which augurs well for John Moxon’s coming year of Captaincy.

The Ladies’ Past Captains played the Ann Dyson Trophy, with the unstoppable Sue Wells winning for the fifth year. Jill Bocquet was thanked for organising this year’s events.
