The Wells Men’s team had to give a large number of shots in all but one match with the format being handicap foursomes in the Somerset Bowl.
Newcomers Peter Cherry and Lloyd Katz went out first and won 3&2. A strong pairing of Simon Elliott and Darren Barnett won easily 5&4. The ‘flowerpot men’, Bill McCollum and Ben Barnett, were third out and once again combined youth and seasoned guile in a 3&2 victory.
The experienced pairing of Glen Crocker and Pascal Norman won 4&2. Finally, Martin Barnes & Ian Burr completed a very pleasing day with a 5&4 win, which meant a 5–0 victory for the home side.
Continuing this success, Wells’ Seniors began their quest to win the Somerset Seniors’ Bowl for a third time in a row. They too were at home to Tickenham, who had a bad start as one of their players was injured before the match and a replacement could not be found. This meant that they had to forfeit that game, giving Glen Crocker & Mike Metcalf a hollow walkover victory.
First out Tim Taylor and Gary Nutt had a comfortable 4&3 win. Ian Burr and Phil Spring, playing in this competition for the first time, similarly cruised to a 4&3 triumph. Steve Rowse & debutant, Nick Poore, had some sticky moments, visiting many of the course’s trees early on, but pulled it together later to record a 5&4 win.
Finally, Nick Wilson and Malcolm Terry made hard work of their match, giving up a three up position, to win on the eighteenth with the last stroke of the match. Thus, Wells won 5–0.
The Ladies’ Alliance Team travelled to Filton for their first away fixture. A good fight was put up by our top three ladies who were playing low handicappers: Tina Davies won her game two up, Jill Bocquet had a half, Veronica Cherry (her first Alliance match) won, two up. We then eagerly awaited for Sue Hockey to finish her game needing a win to half the match; she won three and two. A great result from the team.
On a superb day, eighty players played in this years’ Mixed Open. The scoring was excellent with a majority of teams bettering par. Elizabeth Bryant (10) and Adam Griggs (17) from West Wilts shot the best score of the day, with an outstanding 48 points, to win the Best Visitor Prize, while Bill McCollum (11) an Philippa Gowen (14) won the Best Home prize with 45 points.
The Ladies June Medal results are: Silver Division: 1st Erica Klim, nett 73. Bronze Division: 1st Diane Ramsay, nett 74, 2nd Gill Magrath, nett 77. Copper Division: 1st Patti Jervis, nett 68, 2nd Christine Jukes, nett 77. The winner of the Nan Barber Cup was Patti Jervis.
Wells’ Past Captains played their annual triangular against Enmore Park and Worlebury Golf Club Past Captains at Worlebury. It was good to see our friends from both Clubs after an absence of a year due to Covid.
The match was played as an Individual Stableford, with Wells having eleven players, Enmore eight and Worlebury seven. The scores were added together then divided by the number of players of each team. Unfortunately, the only thing Wells were first in was the number of players. Worlebury won with an average of 35 points with Enmore and Wells a distant second!
The Seniors’ section has had mixed fortunes recently. The team won 3–5 to 2.5 against Wedmore, halved against Filton; lost 5–1 against Farrington Park (where Nick Carter had four birdies) and halved against Enmore Park.
