With all the festive season social events now completed at Mendip, thoughts have once again turned to playing golf.
The year got underway with the Captain’s Drive In.
A full complement of 25 teams of four, with several teams regrettably having to be balloted out, took part in a shotgun start. Whilst the weather did its best to spoil proceedings with a delayed start and a suspension of play, enough holes were played to complete a competition.
After play, new Captain, Richard Jeffrey and Ladies’ Captain, Patricia Rawlins completed their Drive In in the traditional manner. Many more members then joined the festivities in the clubhouse, where the exchange of Captains’ jackets took place, speeches were made, and then everyone tucked into some excellent food prepared by Andy and his team.
The winning Men’s team was Nigel Brokenshire, Ian Fairclough, Paul Drew and Martin Wilkins, with the team of Nigel Hill, Mike Snaith, Jim Scott and Michael Gardiner close behind. The winning Ladies’ team was Sarah James, Jean Padfield, Lyn Cox and Elaine Richardson.
The Ladies’ first competition of the year was a nine hole Stableford played in very frosty conditions. The Silver Division was won by Linda Brobson with twenty points, followed by Anita Butcher with nineteen, just beating Chris Olds on countback. Bronze Division was won by Joan Clark with an amazing twenty-four points, followed by Alison Letts with nineteen points and Andrea Williams with eighteen.
Copper Division was won by Eileen Masters with twenty-two points, followed by Anne Collins with twenty and Allison Rumming with nineteen.
The following week, the Ladies played a nine hole Greensome and this was won by Marian Speed and Karen Cookson, with Mary Ware and Chris Olds second and Jean Padfield and Lulu Carolan third, all three pairings scoring seventeen points!
