MENDIP’S Club championships were held over a hot weekend, providing a challenge for the 83 golfers taking part, though course conditions proved to be very good.

The new Men’s Champion is David Goldie (2) with a 36 hole score of 147, 5 over par, who beat Ian Parham (1) same score, on the 2nd hole of the playoff. Daniel Owen (+1) was 3rd with 148 and Wayne Black (Sc) was 4th with 150.

The Frost Cup, the net competition went to 14 year old Alec Roberts with a 36 hole total of 132, 10 under par. 2nd was Trevor Messenger with 136.

Not to take anything away from the first two but a very special mention to the 3rd placed player, Selwyn Rees. A great challenge in golf has always been to shoot a score better than your age and Selwyn achieved that with a Gross 87 on the second day, Selwyn is 88 years old, amazing achievement.

The July Mid Week Stableford saw a terrific entry of 75 competing. Div 1 went to Charlie Pike with 40 points, Matt Rawlings was 2nd with 36 after count back from Richard Jeffery.

The Ladies Club Championships was played on the same weekend as the Mens but with a much smaller field.

The Ladies Champion is Aimee Sawyer who retained her title and who has now won on seven occasions. In 2nd place came 17 year old Connie Cox. The net prize went to Susy Rudkin after count back from Jenny Merrett.

The Ladies Bowmaker event saw runaway winners Maureen Charlton, Pauline Young, Lally Gibson and Carol King win with 92 points.

The Ladies ICL Team on a very showery day, had a fine win over Oake Manor 6-1 with wins from Carol King, Jane Ball, Fiona Hassard, Susan Forshaw, Ali Kay and Lillian Peel.

Lady Captain Louise Scott held a very successful Lady Captains Away Day when 24 played at Lyme Regis despite having to battle the sea mist which rolled in and out at various times during the day.

Run this year as a selected Team event the winners were Jane Ball, Susan Forshaw, Julie Doyle and Susy Rudkin with 89 points with Suzie Howe, Annette Jobbins, Debbie Godwin and Ann Padley 2nd with 87.

The Individual competition went to Carol Howerd with 40 points after count back from Susan Forshaw.

104 Seniors competed for the Bill Freeman Trophy. Div 3 was won by John Shakesby with 41 points, James Boyce was 2nd with 39 after count back from Andy Price. Div 2 was won by Paul Smith with 41.

Div 1 went to Chris Lindley with 39, Brian Smith was 2nd with 37 and Bryan Lewis was 3rd with 36 after count back. However, the overall Trophy Winner was Antony George with 44 points.

The Seniors Avalon Team went down to a narrow 2-3 defeat to Mendip Spring, wins coming from Steve Davis/Nigel Brokenshire and Bryan Lewis/Simon Atkinson. The Seniors Friendly Team visited Tidworth for the 2nd leg of the Tidworth Trophy annual challenge match carrying forward a 5-2 lead.

Wins for Ian Whittamore/Mike Tout, Paul Wood/Mike Snaith, Paul Morgan/Andy Humphries, Richard White/Antony George and a halved match from Steve Davis/Paul Godwin secured a 4½-2½ win and overall victory meaning that Mendip retain the Trophy.
