The Ladies’ Rogers Cup team played in the second round match of this County competition at Stockwood Vale against a team from Minehead.
Wet weather threatened, but didn’t materialise, allowing players to find their best shots. First out was Glynis Slater who had a comfortable win, finding the greens fast, but true. Philippa Gowen drew on her Alliance team experience to win her match. Tina Davies, Ladies’ Captain, felt confident from the start and negotiated the short par threes well to win. Phyl Lewison played steadily, winning her match. Janice White had a tense start, but settled down to win on the fourteenth. So, a 5-2 win for Wells, helped considerably by their caddies; Jenny Ead, Rose Hallett, Mary Harrison, Janette Ambrosini, Pauline Garrett, Doreen Douglas and Diane Ramsay.
Wells’ Senior Men had a convincing home win in their friendly match against Farrington Park by five matches to one. There were good performances by John Field on debut, partnering Dave Hayward and Ged Ramsell with Nick Carter. Ken Ford and Glyn Hallett, Peter Leverick and Len Sweales and Pete Twinney and Jon Mackness also triumphed on the very well presented Wells course.
The Ladies’ Grant Cup is two medal rounds in a two-week period and the outright winner was Julie Blunden, with nett aggregate 142. Cath Levell was the runner-up with nett 153.
Jill Bocquet and Janice White won the Australian Spoons competition after countback on the last nine and go through to the South-West
Regional Final, which will be played at Long Sutton. The runners-up were Sue Hockey and Cath Levell.
